Zvi Magen, Udi Dekel, and Sarah Fainberg—How Deep are the Cracks in the Russian-Iranian Coalition in Syria?:

Recent developments in the international arena and on the battlefield in Syria invite some perspective on the stability of the Russian-Iranian coalition formed in September 2015. It appears that after three months of military effort, Russia’s involvement in Syria has not produced the results Moscow anticipated. Russia made a strategic decision to intervene militarily in the civil war in Syria in order to defend the regime of Bashar al-Assad. This decision was based on Russia’s interests in the Middle East and elsewhere, headed by the desire to expand Russia’s regional influence, preserve a naval foothold on the Mediterranean shore, and to challenge the overriding standing of the United States in the Middle East. A “natural” coalition of Assad’s allies formed in Syria, comprising Russia, Iran, the Syrian army, Hezbollah, and Shiite militias operating as Iranian proxies. Despite the Russian statements that its military involvement in Syria was aimed primarily at combating the Islamic State, most of Russia’s attacks were designed to help the al-Assad regime, with airstrikes targeting rebel organizations and air support for Assad’s allies fighting on the ground. It now appears that after months of air-land military effort by the Russian-Iranian coalition, the integrated attack, which focused on gaining control of essential territory in northern Syria (the Aleppo area, the Aleppo-Homs artery, and the passages to the coastal sector) has been halted. As a result, friction and conflicts of interest have surfaced between the pro-Assad coalition members, and political disputes have added to the military difficulties. Russian President Vladimir Putin has attempted to exploit the military intervention to forge an international framework to devise a political roadmap for ending the civil war in Syria. The diplomatic measures, however, have also bogged down. Moreover, the agreement between the major powers, specifically between Russia and the United States, to launch a political process that will shape a future settlement in Syria including the regime’s future was not regarded favorably by Iran.

SnyderTalk Comment: The situation in Syria is chaotic.  Those involved include ISIS of various persuasions, Syrian rebels, and the Assad regime.  All of them are vying for power and control.

Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah are fighting for Assad.  Russia and Iran have had a spat.  Hezbollah has turned tail and is running back to Lebanon.  The U.S. is supporting one or more versions of Syrian rebels.

Sound confusing?  It is.

Don’t worry.  Obama said that he has everything under control.  People who believe that will believe almost anything.

Rubin Center IDC Herzliya— Unseen Islamic State Pamphlet on Slavery: The news outlet Reuters has been a running a series of pieces on Islamic State documents and files obtained by U.S. special forces during the Abu Sayyaf raid earlier this year. A recent article by the outlet mentions a pamphlet on slavery that Reuters was able to view. It so happens I was able to obtain this pamphlet from a contact in northern Syria earlier this year, and I produce the text and my translation of this pamphlet for the first time in the public domain below. The pamphlet, issued by the Diwan al-’Iftaa wa al-Buhuth (Fatwa Issuing and Research Department), outlines basic justifications for the practice of slavery, particularly as regards concubines.

CNNAs Saudi Arabia severs ties with Iran, questions loom in volatile region: Saudi Arabia kicked out Iran’s diplomats on Sunday, saying an attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran was the last straw. It’s not uncommon for countries to boot officials when they’re at odds, but analysts say Saudi Arabia’s decision to sever diplomatic ties with Iran on the heels of its execution of a Shiite cleric could be an ominous sign that something much more serious is in the offing.

NBC NewsFBI Seeks ‘Peaceful’ End to Armed Standoff at Oregon Federal Building: The FBI was leading efforts early Monday to bring a “peaceful” end to a standoff with armed protesters who occupied a federal building in rural Oregon. The group seized the remote Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters Saturday after splintering off from a larger protest about ranchers’ rights in the small town of Burns.

CNNArmed protesters refuse to leave federal building in Oregon: Two days after taking over a federal building, armed protesters in Oregon are refusing to budge until they get what they want. The problem is, they haven’t specified what it would take to get them to leave. What started Saturday as a rally supporting two local ranchers led to a broader anti-government protest and now the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge building near Burns.

Washington TimesDemocrats unsure Hillary Clinton can beat Donald Trump in general election: Democratic Party activists are conflicted over whether Hillary Clinton can take on Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump in the general election, with some fearing she provides too much ammunition for the flamboyant businessman’s style of attack.

SnyderTalk Comment: The Democrat take on Hillary Clinton’s chances against Trump should open everyone’s eyes:

  • Democrat Party activists aren’t concerned that Clinton is a liar.
  • They aren’t worried about her dismal performance as secretary of state.
  • They don’t mind that she committed criminal acts by putting classified information at risk and then lying about it.
  • They don’t care that she is on the wrong side of the Islamist issue, the gun restriction issue, and the immigration issue.
  • Her positions on sodomy and murder on demand for pregnant women are not problems for them.

The only thing Democrats worry about is that Clinton might not be able to beat Trump in a general election.

I’ve got news for Democrat Party activists: no Democrat can beat Trump or Cruz.  I think Christie can beat any Democrat, too.  So could Rubio.  If things continue to deteriorate, by Election Day anyone other than a Democrat will win.

People who don’t feel the anger building don’t have a grip on reality.

Fox NewsSweden introduces new ID checks at Danish border to stem flow of migrants: Sweden has introduced new border controls for people entering the country by train, bus or ferry in a bid to stem the flow of migrants.

PoliticoHow one phrase divided the EU and Israel: Israel’s U.S. ambassador sent gift boxes for the 2015 holiday season containing wine, olive oil, body cream, and halva — and a defiant note calling out the European Union. The products came from what the international community considers to be occupied territories, and Ambassador Ron Dermer was determined to make a blunt point about the EU’s recent move to instruct member countries on how to label goods produced in areas outside Israel’s 1967 borders.

Jerusalem PostIsrael begins sealing homes of Palestinian terrorists in east Jerusalem: As a punitive measure aimed at deterring future instances, Israeli authorities destroy the homes of Palestinians who commit acts of violence motivated by nationalism.

AlgemeinerTwo New Year’s Resolutions for Israel: Forget Oslo, Embrace the East: There are two things that I would like to see friends of Israel promote this year. The first is acknowledging the futility of any possible negotiated conclusion of hostilities between Israel and Palestinian-Arabs. The second is clearly articulating that although Israel remains a close ally with much of the West, it will and must pursue mutually-beneficial relations elsewhere.

Ynet NewsFear that Hezbollah will use stormy weather to attack Israel: For the past few days, the IDF has been performing controlled bombings in the Lebanese border region. These include artillery fire into open areas, and are meant to prevent Hezbollah from exploiting the stormy weather Israel has been experiencing lately in order to execute attacks aimed at avenging Samir Kuntar, a senior Hezbollah member who was recently assassinated. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has publically accused Israel of being responsible for killing Kuntar.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
