‘Affluenza’ tells us a lot about Our Society
The so-called “affluenza teen” was detained in Mexico. See “The ‘affluenza’ teen case, explained” for background information.
I’m not a regular Rush Limbaugh listener, but if Katie and I are taking a long car trip, at noon I tune him in.
Limbaugh airs a variety of parody ads. One of them is about people who suffer from “affluenza”.
Limbaugh coined the term. It means that the person is unable to see things clearly or behave appropriately because he is too affluent.
I never dreamed that anyone would use affluenza as a defense in a real situation, but it happened and it worked.
I taught at the University of Virginia for 25 years. In 1979 when I arrived in Charlottesville, UVA was about to announce a $400 million capital campaign. At that time, it was the largest fundraising effort ever undertaken by a public university.
While I taught at UVA, fundraising never stopped. It was one capital campaign after another until I departed.
Frank Hereford was President of UVA in 1979. He was a “Virginia gentleman” with good sense. Hereford kept fundraising in perspective. Those who followed him as president were not cut from the same bolt of cloth.
By the time I retired, fundraising at UVA had become the tail wagging the dog.
Shortly before I retired, a colleague from the Development Office came to see me in my office. In casual conversation, he told me that the V.P. for Development had told the development officers that fundraising was Job One at UVA. Regrettably, he was right and I knew it.
That struck me. If Frank Hereford had heard his V.P. for Development make a statement like that, there would have been hell to pay.
A True Story: One Example
UVA admitted the son of a wealthy entrepreneur whose company you would recognize. I won’t mention the company’s name. It’s not essential to the story. The principle is important.
The son was a discipline problem. One day, he hit a fellow student in the head with a 5-iron and injured him badly. That led to his dismissal.
One of my leadership students who knew the perpetrator brought the subject up in class and wanted to talk about it. He was concerned because he couldn’t understand why it took so long for UVA administrators to recognize the problem and deal with it.
He said that similar things had occurred several times and that if the guy’s father had not been wealthy, UVA administrators would have cut him loose long before. I knew he was right.
The subject was germane so we talked about it. Eventually, the class reached the conclusion that money can blind people to truth and subvert justice.
I agreed. I saw evidence of it many times at UVA as fundraising was on the rise.
As an aside, one day I may write a book titled The Filmflam. If I do, you should read it.
The Lesson
The apostle Paul said that the lust for money is the root of all sorts of evil. (1 Timothy 6: 10) I’ve provided one good example.
We have reached the point where people with money are admired no matter how corrupt and perverted they are, and children with wealthy parents can get away with murder. That tells us a lot about the condition of our society.
Paul also said that Yahweh does not show favoritism. (Romans 2: 11) Neither should we.
Race, ethnicity, wealth, etc. cannot be allowed to subvert justice. The “affluenza teen” and his family are examples of this problem at work in our midst. There are many others. We have the power to solve these problems, and we must solve them.
Justice matters to Yahweh. I should matter to us, too. In the end, it will matter whether we like it or not.

SnyderTalk Comment: I first heard the “Jesus was a Palestinian” lie in 1998. For decades, Palestinian leaders have been trying to win Christian support for their sins by claiming ownership of the Messiah.
They don’t know him, so lying is no problem for them.
As a Christian who visits Israel regularly, I can say this without hesitation. Christians are safe in Israel. Israel is the only place in the Middle East today where we are safe.
I have Christian friends in Jordan who would disagree with me. Jordan is a special country by covenant. David’s grandmother, Ruth, was from Moab. It’s in Jordan.
Ingrid Carlqvist—Sweden: Rapes, Acquittals and Severed Heads: November 4: The Swedish Immigration Service sent out a press release, saying that it had hired close to a thousand additional employees since June. The Immigration Service now has over 7,000 employees, including hourly workers and consultants — double the 3,350 employees who worked there in 2012. Most of the new recruits work with the legal processing of asylum applications, but the units dealing with receiving migrants and filing their initial applications have also expanded considerably. As if the record influx of migrants this autumn were not crushing enough, the Immigration Service also had trouble retaining its staff. Employees complain about being badly treated: they are always expected to be on call, and possibly even work Christmas Eve.
Reuters—US-led air strikes kill IS leaders linked to Paris attacks: A U.S.-led coalition has killed 10 Islamic State leaders in the past month with targeted air strikes, including individuals linked to last month’s attacks in Paris, a spokesman for the coalition said on Tuesday. “Over the past month, we’ve killed 10 ISIL leadership figures with targeted air strikes, including several external attack planners, some of whom are linked to the Paris attacks,” said U.S. Army Colonel Steve Warren, a spokesman for the U.S.-led military campaign against Islamic State, also known by the acronym ISIL. “Others had designs on further attacking the West.”
CNN—Blast kills 26 people; Pakistani Taliban faction claims responsibility: At least 26 people were killed in a blast Tuesday in the northern Pakistani city of Mardan, police said. The explosion took place at the city’s National Database and Registration Authority offices — where Pakistanis get ID cards and passports. Several other people were injured in the attack, said Saad Wazir of the Mardan police. Police believe a suicide bomber drove his motorcycle into the office building.

Uzay Bulut—Turkey’s Murderous Assault on Kurds: The Turks have begun another massacre in Kurdistan, this time bigger than before, and imposing curfews to pin down their victims. It is the latest demonstration of Turkey’s 90-year-old extermination campaign against the Kurdish population. In Turkey’s Kurdistan, since August 16, there have been 52 open-ended, round-the-clock curfews affecting 17 towns, in which approximately 1,299,061 people reside (2014 population census), according to the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TIHV). Those are predominantly Kurdish towns.
Algemeiner—Israeli Expert Says Hezbollah Retaliation for Kuntar Assassination Likely to Come in Asia, Thailand: Hezbollah’s retribution against Israel for allegedly assassinating arch-terrorist Samir Kuntar in Syria will likely be against a target outside the Jewish state, said Professor Uzi Rabi, the director of the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Tel Aviv University, according to Maariv on Monday. Predicting a “measured and calculated response” by Hezbollah, Rabi said it could happen in “Thailand, Asia or somewhere abroad.”
Washington Post— Finland blocks refugees from cycling across Russian border into Lapland: Despite the geographical distance and inhospitable winter weather, Finland has emerged as an unlikely destination for refugees and migrants in recent months. More than 30,000 refugees seeking asylum have traveled to the country this year, a dramatic increase from the typical 3,000 or so. As the year draws to a close, this sharp surge in arrivals has prompted an unusual move from Finnish authorities: a restriction on bicycle border crossings in Lapland.
Yoel Guzansky, Zvi Magen, and Oded Eran: Russian Nuclear Diplomacy in the Middle East: Israel cannot ignore the procurement of advanced Russian weapons systems by its neighbors, or their accelerated entry into the nuclear field; these plans are liable to serve as a basis for obtaining greater know-how and as a cover for building nuclear weapons capability, certainly if the transfer of know-how includes enrichment capability. The Guardian—Boycott and Sanction Power to Be Stripped from UK Councils: The UK Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) is drawing up new guidelines to prevent local authorities from mounting their own “boycott and sanction” campaigns. The directions, which will be issued early in the new year, are expected to make clear that councils’ procurement and investment policies must be consistent with UK government foreign policy. “Councils should not be using pensions and procurement policies to pursue their own boycotts and sanctions against foreign nations,” a DCLG spokesman said.

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.
