Josh Rogin—Obama’s New Answers on Iran Fall Flat:

Top Obama administration officials have released new details about how they would lift most sanctions against Iran. Those are unnerving some experts, who doubt the administration’s claims about [how] the sanctions will hold up.

In speeches last week to a conference at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and Vice President Joe Biden revealed new details about the end of most sanctions against Iran if a nuclear deal is reached. The officials also claimed that most of the sanctions, including multilateral sanctions, could be snapped back into place if Iran cheated, and they argued that giving Iran tens of billions of dollars in cash won’t dramatically increase Iran’s spending on terrorism and other nefarious activities.

Lew spoke to a private meeting of Washington Institute members last Wednesday, after which Treasury posted his remarks. He said that President Obama planned to use his own authority to suspend sanctions against Iran’s oil, banking and trade sectors after Iran complied with the initial parts of the deal and that Congress wouldn’t actually be asked to lift sanctions during his presidency.

[…]

Several experts said that in order for Iran to receive the sanctions relief it seeks as part of a deal, most if not all of the IRGC sanctions would have to go. That could allow for a huge expansion of the group’s influence and activities.

“Isolating the Quds force from the rest of the IRGC ignores the fact that there is a vast IRGC infrastructure that has been involved in human rights violations, proliferation, and terrorism,” said Jonathan Schanzer of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.  “It leaves the IRGC with a great deal of room to maneuver.”

SnyderTalk Comment: Skepticism about the Obama administration’s handling of the Iran nuclear negotiations is based on experience with the president for more than 6 years.  His obvious leaning toward radical Islamists leaves plenty of room for doubt and concern in everyone’s mind.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s misgivings about the Iran deal are well known.  He continues to warn about where Obama is leading us.  See “Netanyahu: ‘No Iran Deal Is Better than This Bad Deal’”.

Netanyahu has been as accommodating to President Obama as humanly possible.  I think he has gone too far to appease the president.  He has endured repeated insults and name-calling that are beneath any president, and he behaved like a gentleman.  All the while, he has done his best to go along with Obama on virtually everything.

Not so on the Iran deal.  That tells us a lot.

This deal is crucial for Israel, for the U.S., and for the world.  It’s too important simply to accept Obama’s assurance that he will do the right thing.  Too much is at stake for foolish gambles.

It boils down this: Obama wants Netanyahu to place Israel’s security and her future in his hands.  That’s not a good idea.  Countries that have trusted Obama have suffered mightily, and they are still suffering.  The Israeli people can’t afford to take chances with anyone much less Barack Obama.

Americans who love Israel need to let their feelings about the Iran nuclear deal be heard.  They need to contact their senators and tell them to stand with Israel.  Specifically, they need to tell their senators that the sanctions are working and that removing them without proof that Iran is not seeking and will not seek to build nuclear weapons is counterproductive.

Laura Hollis: A Dangerous Certainty—In Roland Joffe’s 1984 film, “The Killing Fields,” we see the Cambodian Communist revolution and its aftermath through the eyes of Dith Pran, the film’s main character. In one iconic scene in a Khmer Rouge re-education camp, Pran looks on while children march in a circle, fists pumping in the air, chanting Khmer Rouge propaganda. Elsewhere, a group of seated adults are encouraged by party leaders to admit their bourgeois pasts and come forward. They are promised a fresh start in the “new” Cambodia. This, of course, is a ruse; having identified themselves, they are then taken out and shot. Anyone who has studied history will recognize these as signature tactics of contemporary extremist political movements, not only in Cambodia but in North Vietnam, China, Laos, North Korea, Cuba and every socialist republic in the former Soviet Union. Truth and inquiry are replaced by propaganda. Education becomes indoctrination. All speech save that which has been pre-approved is forbidden. Those with opposing viewpoints are mocked, dehumanized and finally silenced — typically by imprisonment or death.

Robert Fisk: Who is bombing whom in the Middle East?— Let me try to get this right. The Saudis are bombing Yemen because they fear the Shia Houthis are working for the Iranians. The Saudis are also bombing Isis in Iraq and the Isis in Syria. So are the United Arab Emirates. The Syrian government is bombing its enemies in Syria and the Iraqi government is also bombing its enemies in Iraq. America, France, Britain, Denmark, Holland, Australia and – believe it or not – Canada are bombing Isis in Syria and Isis in Iraq, partly on behalf of the Iraqi government (for which read Shia militias) but absolutely not on behalf of the Syrian government. The Jordanians and Saudis and Bahrainis are also bombing Isis in Syria and Iraq because they don’t like them, but the Jordanians are bombing Isis even more than the Saudis after their pilot-prisoner was burned to death in a cage. The Egyptians are bombing parts of Libya because a group of Christian Egyptians had their heads chopped off by what might – notionally – be the same so-called Islamic State, as Isis refers to itself. The Iranians have acknowledged bombing Isis in Iraq – of which the Americans (but not the Iraqi government) take a rather dim view. And of course the Israelis have several times bombed Syrian government forces in Syria but not Isis (an interesting choice, we’d all agree). Chocks away!

Khaled Abu Toameh: Palestinians Need Reforms, Not Elections— The Palestinian Authority (PA) has recently come under pressure from Western governments and politicians to hold long overdue elections in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. But those who are demanding that the Palestinians hold another free and democratic election are ignoring the possibility that Hamas will once again win the vote. The PA leadership in the West Bank is well aware of Hamas’s strong chance of winning the election. That is why PA President Mahmoud Abbas and his ruling Fatah faction are not enthusiastic about the idea. Abbas and Fatah have yet to recover from the trauma of the January 2006 parliamentary election, which resulted in a victory for Hamas and the subsequent expulsion of the Palestinian Authority from the Gaza Strip.

Shlomo Cesana, Daniel Siryoti, and Dan Lavie: Netanyahu: “No Iran Deal Is Better than This Bad Deal”—In an interview with Israel Channel 10 TV on Saturday, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry accused critics of the framework nuclear deal with Iran of “hysteria.” Meanwhile, in a video message marking the Washington Institute for Near East Policy’s 30th anniversary on Saturday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “Preventing Iran from being able to build nuclear weapons is the foremost challenge of our generation. Unfortunately, the Lausanne framework fails to meet this challenge and if it will be realized, it will make the world a much more dangerous place.” “But it’s not too late. Countries around the world must have the courage and the resolve to hold out for a better deal, one that will actually do the job of blocking Iran’s path to the bomb. Now, there are those who say that the Lausanne framework will make Israel safer. As the prime minister of Israel, I can tell you categorically: This deal will endanger Israel, big time.” “But it’s not just Israel that will be endangered. The Middle East and the entire world will be threatened. A better deal is necessary. A better deal is possible. A better deal must and can be achieved. But if not, no deal is better than this bad deal.”

Francine Kiefer: Can Congress Help Obama Get a Stronger Iran Deal?—Supporters of congressional review of any final deal with Iran believe that overwhelming support for the bill can help U.S. negotiators reach a better nuclear deal with Iran, particularly when it comes to verification and sanctions relief – two areas where Tehran and Washington disagree. “A united Congress with the White House…gives the administration a stronger hand on negotiations,” said Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), the lead Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Tehran says publicly it expects sanctions relief as soon as a deal is reached. The White House and Congress argue that Tehran needs to prove itself first. Strong resolve on the Iran bill now could give the White House leverage on this and another area of disagreement in the talks – a robust inspection and verification process, senators say. The U.S. insists that international inspectors be able to go wherever they have suspicions, but Iran says military bases are off limits. So-called “anytime, anywhere” inspection is the “linchpin” of any deal, said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) agrees. “From the left, center, and right in the Senate…it’s the inspections regime as the guarantor of Iranian compliance that is probably the piece that is most important.” The U.S. can argue, “Hey, I’ve got this tough Congress I need to convince,” says Kaine.

Brig.-Gen. (res.) Yossi Kuperwasser: Israeli Security Policy in Syria—The attempted Hizbullah attack thwarted in the northern Golan Heights on April 26, 2015, and the air strikes apparently carried out by the Israeli Air Force on April 21 and 24 against military targets in Syria, as reported in Arab media, join a series of similar incidents over the past three years. The attacks purportedly targeted advanced weapons being stored before their transfer to Hizbullah in Lebanon. Apart from isolated cases, Israel has avoided directly responding to reports on the strikes and merely made declarations about its general policy. Syria and Hizbullah, for their part, have generally refrained from addressing the reports publicly and have not mounted a military operation as a direct response to the strikes. The attacks and reported air strikes indicate an ongoing battle between Israel and the Iranian-led radical axis to set the rules of the game in Syrian territory and the severity of the threat that the radical axis can pose to Israel from the north. Hizbullah is seen as the military arm of Iran, its main purpose being to fight Israel and Iran’s other adversaries in the region. It is trying to acquire more precise missiles, with longer ranges and heavier warheads, along with anti-ship and anti-aircraft systems, and more. Hizbullah’s involvement in Syria creates legitimacy for anti-Lebanese activity by Sunni radicals. Its deep involvement in the Syrian civil war is nowhere near its conclusion and will continue to exact a heavy price.

New York Post Editorial: UN Report Outlines How Hamas Used Kids as Human Shields—A UN report published last week confirmed that during last summer’s war Hamas stored mortars and other weapons in at least three UN schools and fired rockets at Israel from two of them. Hamas, desperate to win world sympathy by any means, has always been happy to use Palestinian innocents as human shields – the more casualties, the better. Hamas has long used UN facilities as a staging grounds and observation posts for attacks on Israel. And the UN barely raised an objection – unless and until Hamas was caught and called out.

Michael Crowley: Iran’s Anti-U.S. Conspiracies—A top Iranian general, Ahmad Reza Pourdastan, the commander of Iran’s ground forces, recently claimed that the U.S. staged the 9/11 attacks as an excuse to invade the Muslim world. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, has repeatedly said that the Islamic State was deliberately created by the West to divide Muslims and bomb their countries. Iranian state television recently claimed that Sen. John McCain met personally with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Sunni militant group’s caliph. Last September, Khamenei added that the West also created al-Qaeda and the Taliban. During an appearance on state TV last July, Valiollah Naghipourfar, an Iranian cleric and professor at Tehran University, calmly asserted that Israel’s intelligence-gathering prowess is fueled by supernatural powers. “The Jew is very practiced in sorcery,” he said.

Omer Einav: The Battle for Daraa: Shifting the Balance in Syria?— The battles underway since February 2015 in the Daraa district in southern Syria between the Syrian army, the Iranian Quds forces, and Hizbollah on the one hand, and various rebel groups and organizations on the other, are important for the actors involved, as well as for those not involved. These battles are part of a struggle for control of the Damascus-Quneitra-Daraa triangle, a crucial area for both the consolidation of the Bashar al-Assad regime and its overthrow. The opposing sides attribute great importance to the results of the campaign and are preparing for long, difficult fighting before there might be any decision. The possible lines of development in the Daraa district, with their consequences for the future of Syria in general – a victory by the Iranian-led axis, a victory by the rebels, or no decision – will not be comfortable for Israel. At the same time, the problematic consequences of a victory by the axis will presumably be more immediate than the challenge that will be created for Israel by a victory of the rebel forces.

Fox News: Gulf States Demanding Major New Weapons Systems From US in Exchange for Iran Nuke Support—Leading Persian Gulf states want major new weapons systems and security guarantees from the White House in exchange for backing a nuclear agreement with Iran, according to U.S. and Arab officials. The leaders of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, plan to use a high-stakes meeting with President Obama later this month to request additional fighter jets, missile batteries and surveillance equipment. They also intend to pressure Obama for new defense agreements between the U.S. and the Gulf nations that would outline terms and scenarios under which Washington would intervene if they are threatened by Iran, according to these officials. The demands underscore what complicated diplomatic terrain Obama is navigating as he drives toward one of his top foreign-policy goals, and they demonstrate how a nuclear deal with Iran aimed at stabilizing the Middle East risks further militarizing an already volatile region.

Yair Rosenberg: South African Student Body President: “I Love Adolf Hitler”— As a general rule, if a person doesn’t want his or her anti-Israel activism confused for anti-Semitism, it’s best not to say things like, “I love Adolf Hitler.” And in the unfortunate event that one lets slip such an admission, it’s definitely not advisable to defend it in an 800-word statement. And yet, this is exactly what Mcebo Dlamini, a strident Israel boycott advocate, and student body president of one of South Africa’s oldest universities, did this past week. Dlamini, the elected student leader of Wits University in Johannesburg, made the offending comment on Facebook “below a graphic comparing modern Israel to Nazi Germany,” reported the student newspaper, The Wits Vuvuzela. (Dlamini did not explain why, if Hitler was such an admirable statesman, Israel should be condemned for following his example.) When challenged by the paper on his remarks, Dlamini did not back down. “What I love about Hitler is his charisma and his capabilities to organize people,” he said. “We need more leaders of such caliber. I love Adolf Hitler.” Hitler, the paper laconically noted by way of response, “is generally blamed for triggering World War II and sending over 6-million Jews to death camps as well as Roma, communists and homosexuals.”

Burak Bekdil: How Democracies Decay— “That [Turkey] sounds to me like the late Weimar Republic. So I would have no difficulty at all in agreeing that the logics of certain possibilities are being put together in ways that seem very reminiscent to the broader context of right-wing thought in Weimar Republic, especially after 1930.” Thus commented Geoff Eley, a British-born historian whose early work focused on the radical nationalism in Imperial Germany, and, in Italy, fascism. It is a powerful analogy showing how theoretically “democratic” Turkey is moving in the same direction as Germany’s Weimar Republic did after1933. Historians often refer to Germany’s federal republic and semi-presidential representative democracy, which in 1919 replaced imperial rule, as the Weimar Republic. After a period of relatively liberal democracy, President Paul von Hindenburg in 1930 assumed dictatorial emergency powers to back the administrations of three German chancellors, and finally Hitler.  The year 1933 would mark the ascent to power of the Nazi Party; its immediate measures would include unconstitutional legislation. This would be the beginning of the Third Reich. Turkey’s own 1933 was the year 2011 when then Prime Minister (now President) Recep Tayyip Erdogan won his third consecutive parliamentary election victory since 2002, with a landslide 49.5% of the national vote. Eley’s Turkish-German analogy is not unfounded.

Bill Clinton defends family foundation fund raising

SnyderTalk Comment: Evidence of wrongdoing in the Clinton family foundation is growing and investigators are still busy at work.  Not a problem for Clinton.  His strategy is to lie until the heat dies down.  By then, it’s usually safe politically to tell the truth.

That’s his modus operandi.  He used it successfully during the Lewinskygate affair, for example.  Lesson learned.

No matter what the Clintons have done, though, Bill’s explanation will satisfy his and his wife’s followers.  Fact is their fans don’t need and many of them don’t want an explanation.  They would still support the Clintons even if they conducted illicit sexual liaisons in the Oval Office.  That’s not an opinion.

Hillary supporters are the worst of all.  Many of them were elated when they read a report about her being caught in bed with another woman, this time a former White House secretary.  That’s exactly what they want to see in their president—wicked behavior with no regrets.

There are many sources for Hillary’s homosexuality going back decades.  From Arkansas to the White House to the State Department, she has left a trail that’s as sordid as her husband’s.  In her book Passion and Betrayal, Gennifer Flowers quotes Bill Clinton confiding to her, “Honey, she’s probably eaten more pussy than I have.”

That blunt confession leaves no room for doubt.  Hillary supporters will write it off.  Decent people won’t.

The Clintons’ shamelessness and their lust for fame, power, and wealth keep them going in spite of behavior that decent people can’t abide. Because of Obama, the country may have changed enough by now to elect Hillary president regardless.  We’ll know soon enough.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Exodus 9

1 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and speak to him, ‘Thus says Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, “Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 2 For if you refuse to let them go and continue to hold them, 3 behold, the hand of Yahweh will come with a very severe pestilence on your livestock which are in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels, on the herds, and on the flocks. 4 But Yahweh will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing will die of all that belongs to the sons of Israel.”’” 5 Yahweh set a definite time, saying, “Tomorrow Yahweh will do this thing in the land.” 6 So Yahweh did this thing on the next day, and all the livestock of Egypt died; but of the livestock of the sons of Israel, not one died. 7 Pharaoh sent, and behold, there was not even one of the livestock of Israel dead. But the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
