Joby Warrick: With outlines of a deal, Iran embarks on uncharted territory with the US:

It started with a simple handshake. On Sept. 26, 2013, the top diplomats of the United States and Iran — bitter foes for nearly 35 years — exchanged awkward greetings on the sidelines of a U.N. conference in New York.

Though it lasted only minutes, the encounter between Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Secretary of State John F. Kerry was a breakthrough of sorts: the highest-level exchange between an Iranian and a U.S. official in decades. It would be followed by phone calls, secret talks and hours of direct negotiations, all culminating in Thursday’s historic framework agreement on limiting Iran’s nuclear program.

The ultimate success of the nuclear deal may not be known for months or even years. But for Iranians, the negotiations have already produced something unparalleled since the birth of the Islamic Republic: Direct engagement with a country that Iranian leaders have long denounced as the “Great Satan.”

Statements by U.S. and Iranian officials made clear that the two countries are nowhere close to normalizing relations. But to longtime Iran observers, the talks themselves were a milestone achievement, a pivot point in Iran’s post-revolutionary history and the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s relations with the outside world.

SnyderTalk Comment: This deal moves the U.S. closer to Iran and further away from Israel.

Things are heating up so gradually that most people hardly notice.  When things get hot, and it will happen quickly, they will notice.  By then, it will be too late.

See “US, Iran Reach Nuke Deal Outline”:

Iranian officials quickly declared victory, arguing the deal would lift all international sanctions on the regime while allowing it to continue to develop nuclear power.  “All Security Council resolutions will be terminated, all U.S. nuclear-related secondary sanctions as well as EU sanctions will be terminated” during the term of the agreement, Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a press conference. “None of those measures include closing our facilities. The proud people of Iran would never accept that. Our facilities will continue. We will continue enriching, we will continue research and development, our heavy water reactor will be modernized and we will continue the Fordow facility,” Zarif said.

Iran gave up nothing.  Netanyahu is right.  Israel’s security is threatened, and so is the security of every Middle Eastern country including Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Lebanon are gone already.  Getting them back will be very difficult.

One-by-one, countries in Africa and particularly countries in North Africa are going.  Keeping them for falling into Islamist hands will be difficult.

This is Obama’s doing.  He’s proven that he is great at creating problems, but he’s not capable of solving them.

These developments were predictable.  We’ve been talking about it for years.  Now the reality is upon us.  Can we solve the problems without a major war—another world war?  I don’t think so.

This article shows how out-of-touch the political left in the U.S. is: “Nuclear deal: Brightest hope for Iranians since 1979 revolution”.  Time will show that that perspective is ridiculous.  It’s like saying that Hitler’s agreement with Chamberlain was Germany’s brightest hope.

See “Rouhani vows Iran will ‘honor promises’ in nuke deal”.  We’ll see.  Remember what Iran said during the negotiations: destroying Israel is “nonnegotiable”.

Caroline Glick: The diplomatic track to war— The world powers assembled at Lausanne, Switzerland, with the representatives of the Islamic Republic may or may not reach a framework deal regarding Iran’s nuclear program. But succeed or fail, the disaster that their negotiations have unleashed is already unfolding. The damage they have caused is irreversible. US President Barack Obama, his advisers and media cheerleaders have long presented his nuclear diplomacy with the Iran as the only way to avoid war. Obama and his supporters have castigated as warmongers those who oppose his policy of nuclear appeasement with the world’s most prolific state sponsor of terrorism. But the opposite is the case. Had their view carried the day, war could have been averted. Through their nuclear diplomacy, Obama and his comrades started the countdown to war.

Benny Toker and Ari Soffer: Israel Should ‘Seriously Consider’ Striking Iran, Expert Says— Israel should “seriously consider” a military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities in the aftermath of the “framework deal” announced between Tehran and western powers Thursday, a leader defense and security expert said. Speaking to Arutz Sheva Friday, Professor Efraim Inbar, who heads the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, said the deal had realized Israel’s worst fears by leaving Iran’s nuclear program essentially intact. The Islamic Republic’s nuclear program has been granted “legitimacy” by the agreement, which still allowed it to continue enriching uranium and to maintain a reactor capable of producing enriched plutonium, he said. “And that’s what worries Israel, that they (Iran) will be able within a short time frame to reach a nuclear bomb.” “I hold the view that the only way to stop Iran in its journey to a nuclear bomb is through military means,” Inbar maintained, suggesting that “Israel needs to seriously consider striking a number of important nuclear facilities” to head off the threat.

Washington Post Editorial: Obama’s Iran Deal Falls Far Short of His Own Goals—The “key parameters” for an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program released Thursday fall well short of the goals originally set by the Obama administration. None of Iran’s nuclear facilities – including the Fordow center buried under a mountain – will be closed. Not one of the country’s 19,000 centrifuges will be dismantled. Tehran’s existing stockpile of enriched uranium will be “reduced” but not necessarily shipped out of the country. In effect, Iran’s nuclear infrastructure will remain intact. When the accord lapses, the Islamic republic will instantly become a threshold nuclear state. That’s a long way from the standard set by President Obama in 2012 when he declared that “the deal we’ll accept” with Iran “is that they end their nuclear program” and “abide by the UN resolutions that have been in place.” Those resolutions call for Iran to suspend the enrichment of uranium. The proposed accord will provide Iran a huge economic boost that will allow it to wage more aggressively the wars it is already fighting or sponsoring across the region.

Washington Post Editorial: A Reward for Iran’s Noncompliance—As the Obama administration pushes to complete an agreement with Iran on its nuclear program, it has done little to soothe concerns that it is rushing too quickly to settle, offering too many concessions and ignoring glaring warning signs that Tehran won’t abide by any accord. In 2007 and in 2013, Iran agreed with the IAEA on a “work plan” to answer questions about its suspected research on nuclear warheads. It then stonewalled inspectors, refusing to answer questions or permit access to sites. An appropriate response to this blatant violation of agreements would be to insist that Iran complete the IAEA work plan before any long-term accord is signed or any further sanctions lifted. It is vital to establish that Tehran will deliver on its commitments and that it will be held accountable if it does not.

Prime Minister’s Office: Netanyahu: “Iran’s Breakout Time Has Been Reduced to Less than a Year, Probably Much Less”—Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Knesset on Tuesday: “The greatest threat to our security and to our future was and remains Iran’s effort to arm itself with nuclear weapons. The agreement being formulated in Lausanne paves the way to this outcome. It seems that it will leave in Iran’s possession underground installations, the nuclear reactor at Arak and advanced centrifuges, the same things that only a few months ago we were told – and rightly so – were not essential to a nuclear program designed for peaceful purposes.” “Iran’s breakout time for achieving fissile material for nuclear bombs will not be measured in years, as was said at the outset; in our assessment the time has been reduced to less than a year, probably much less. And all of this is before taking into account the ballistic missiles that Iran is continuing to manufacture, the ongoing development of advanced centrifuges, Iran’s obdurate refusal to reveal to the IAEA its activities to develop nuclear weapons and, I add, Iran’s campaign of conquest and terrorism – which is open to all, everyone sees it, before our very eyes – from the Golan Heights to Yemen, from Iraq to Gaza and so many other places.”

Frida Ghitis: Is the U.S. Too Desperate for an Iran Deal?—There is a reason one gets the feeling that it is the U.S. and not Iran that is the more eager, even desperate, side in these talks, even though Iran is the country whose economy was sent into a deep chill by international sanctions; the country whose only significant export, oil, lost more than half of its value in recent months. America’s Arab friends hold the view that Iran is running circles around the U.S. and outplayed Obama. As the writer David Rothkopf put it, “Iran is having a great Obama administration.” Iran has a well-established record of lying and concealing the elements of its nuclear program. The world only learned about Iran’s secret facilities at Arak and Natanz after dissidents raised the alarm. Iran officially, legally, becomes a nuclear threshold state, with the capability to make the final dash to a bomb. International sanctions lifting will begin almost immediately. The deal so far looks like (another) win for Iran.

Voice of America: Iranian President Praises Nuclear Deal—Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has praised the framework agreement reached Thursday on Tehran’s nuclear program, calling it a “day that will remain in the historical memory of the Iranian nation.”

SnyderTalk Comment: Rouhani is right about one thing: it is an important deal.  But it’s not a good deal.  In fact, it’s a terrible deal.

Gordon G. Chang: Does Iran Have Secret Nukes in North Korea?—In October 2012, Iran began stationing personnel at a military base in North Korea close to the Chinese border. The Iranians reportedly are working on both missiles and nuclear weapons. Inspections inside Iran will not give the international community access to any nuclear weapons efforts in North Korea. Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, thought to be Tehran’s chief nuclear scientist, was almost certainly in North Korea in February 2013 to witness its third atomic test. Reports put Iranian technicians on hand for the first two detonations as well. The North Koreans have also sold Iran material for bomb cores. The Telegraph reported that in 2002 a barrel of North Korean uranium cracked open and contaminated the tarmac of Tehran airport. Iran could still continue developing its bomb in North Korea, conducting research there or buying North Korean technology and plans. With the removal of sanctions, Iran will have the cash to accelerate the building of its nuclear arsenal. In other words, Iran could be one day away from a bomb – the flight time from Pyongyang to Tehran – not one year as America hopes.

Nathan Perl-Rosenthal: The Liberal American Jewish Psyche in Crisis— As a child from the staunchly liberal Upper West Side of Manhattan, I went for several years to New York City’s annual Israel Day Parade. I would take the bus across Central Park with an animated young modern Orthodox woman—my Hebrew teacher—and we would stand together in the spring warmth behind police barricades and watch the marchers slowly process up Fifth Avenue. Students from Orthodox day schools followed Reform rabbis and Boy Scouts. Military veterans walked with Jewish Americans for peace. Floats for banks, Jewish-owned businesses and political parties competed for our attention with black velvet kippot and hats, shofarot and a sea of American and Israeli flags. As they flowed north, broad smiles on display, those strange bedfellows felt to me like they belonged together: It seemed, somehow, not only reasonable but inevitable that they were there as one.

Michael Curtis: France Takes the Lead on the Middle East— A political vacuum exists in the Middle East, and it is significant that France has stepped in to fill it in a principled way.  It is a rebuke to the current Obama administration “reassessing” its options regarding Israel, and lacking a trumpet that sounds a clear call to get ready for battle.  The policy of the Obama administration is unclear.  President Barack Obama, out of pique and against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is threatening to endorse a U.N. resolution calling for the creation of a Palestinian state and therefore a two-state solution.  An ambiguous and anonymous White House statement is that the United States was continuing to “find a way forward that advances the interest we and others share in a two state solution.”

TIME: Iran Nuclear Deal: Cheering Crowds Greet Foreign Minister in Tehran—Iran’s top diplomat was given a hero’s welcome by a jubilant crowd Friday after reaching a framework nuclear deal that could ease crippling sanctions. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was cheered as he landed in Tehran on a flight from Switzerland, where the U.S., China and European powers announced a deal meant to block Iran from developing nuclear weapon. In Tehran, residents took to the streets late Thursday, waving flags from cars to celebrate the outline agreement, which sets the stage for work on a final accord over the next three months.

Sam Wilkin and Babak Dehghanpisheh: Tehran Friday prayer leader gives blessing to nuclear deal—The leader of Friday prayers in Tehran hailed a framework nuclear deal reached by Iran and world powers, a sign that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other hardliners will back the accord. Ayatollah Mohammad Emami-Kashani, a 78-year old hardline cleric, gave the weekly sermon at Tehran University — a duty that rotates around senior members of Iran’s conservative clerical establishment. “The negotiating team is firm, wise and calm,” Emami-Kashani said, according to the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA). “The Supreme Leader supports these representatives,” he added.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Exodus 4: 18-20

18 Then Moses departed and returned to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, “Please, let me go, that I may return to my brethren who are in Egypt, and see if they are still alive.” And Jethro said to Moses, “Go in peace.” 19 Now Yahweh said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt, for all the men who were seeking your life are dead.” 20 So Moses took his wife and his sons and mounted them on a donkey, and returned to the land of Egypt. Moses also took the staff of God in his hand.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
