Stephen Collinson—Obama and Netanyahu: A clash of world views, not just personalities:

The disconnect between President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is about a lot more than bad personal chemistry.

Their relationship, which will be played out in all its dysfunctional glory during Netanyahu’s visit to Washington this week, founders on a deep ideological divide and a sharply conflicting world view.

A long, steadily worsening showdown between the rivals is coming to a head in the tense final stages of talks between world powers and Iran in pursuit of a nuclear deal backed by the U.S. but opposed by Netanyahu.

Highly unusual

Netanyahu’s visit is highly unusual. Not only will he not meet with Obama, but he is taking the most prominent stage outside the White House available to a foreign leader in Washington and directly campaigning against one of the president’s top second-term priorities — a nuclear deal with Iran. Netanyahu appears to have concluded that the proposed agreement is so bad that, in a highly unorthodox move, he will actively join Obama’s political adversaries in an effort to derail the president’s Iran deal-making.

The Israeli leader will make the case against the proposed deal in an address to Congress on Tuesday, against the wishes of the White House, at the invitation of GOP House Speaker John Boehner.

SnyderTalk Comment: Obama and Netanyahu do have “a sharply conflicting world view”, but there is another huge difference between them.  Israel is in Iran’s immediate crosshairs.  The U.S. is on Iran’s backburner for the time being.  That will change, though.  I know because that’s what they have said.

Netanyahu has no choice but to tell the American people what he knows before a deal is signed.  Obama is pursuing an agenda that is inconsistent with our nation’s previous commitments and our national security interests.  He is bending over backwards to accommodate Islamist terrorists, and he has turned his back on our allies in the Middle East.  For Obama, things are so bad in the Middle East that Arab leaders, our allies, are openly questioning why Obama is supporting terrorists.

The American people need to hear the truth.  Whether they believe it or not, they still need to hear it.  Whether they want to hear it or not, they still need to hear it.

In the end, every American will pay a high price for Obama’s intentional and unintentional strategic blunders, but Obama won’t listen.  He tells.  That’s one of his problems.

The time has come to bypass Obama.  Thankfully, Netanyahu is willing to do it.  Actually, he has no choice but to do it.

Things could have been much different if Obama didn’t tell so much.

Jerold Auerbach: Netanyahu Speaks and (Some) American Jews Tremble— On the eve of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress the level of hysteria among American Jewish liberals has reached cascading proportions. From full-page advertisements inThe New York Times to anguished columns in The Times of Israel expressions of outrage pour forth. They are furious lest an Israeli prime minister implicate them in such a heinous deed as warning against the imminent surrender of the Obama administration to Iranian nuclear ambitions. All the usual suspects on the Jewish left chimed in. J Street released a petition with 20,000 signees protesting: “I’m a Jew. Bibi does NOT speak for me.” That self-identified “pro-Israel pro-peace” group also purchased a full-page advertisement in The New York Times warning that the Prime Minister’s speech would damage American-Israeli relations. Jewish Voice for Peace urged members of Congress to skip the speech, presumably lest they be contaminated by hearing something outside their comfort zone. Not to be outdone Tikkun declared: “No Mr. Netanyahu, we will not let you drag us into a proxy war for Israel against Iran.”

Husna Haq: What do Americans say about Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit?— Americans are taking sides in a very public, international feud between President Obama, House Speaker John Boehner, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is set to deliver a controversial speech to Congress on Tuesday pushing for tougher sanctions on Iran. At the heart of the dispute is Speaker Boehner’s decision to invite Mr. Netanyahu to speak without consulting the White House, widely seen as a snub to the president. Nearly half of Americans believe it was wrong of Boehner to extend the invitation, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey that found that 48 percent of registered voters disapprove of congressional Republicans’ move to invite Netanyahu to address Congress without notifying Obama first. Some 30 percent say the invitation was OK, and another 22 percent said they didn’t know enough to judge.

Jeff Jacoby: The squabble over Bibi’s speech— Charlie Rose wasn’t sure he’d heard right. National Security Advisor Susan Rice, his guest on PBS, was lamenting that the controversy over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s forthcoming speech to Congress had “injected a degree of partisanship” into the traditionally bipartisan US-Israel relationship. That’s not only “unfortunate,” said Rice. “It’s destructive of the fabric of the relationship.” Rose seemed nonplussed. “It’s destructive of the fabric of the relationship?” The national security advisor dug in. “It’s always been bipartisan. We need to keep it that way . . . And when it becomes injected or infused with politics, that’s a problem.” Well, yes: Netanyahu’s planned March 3 speech has certainly become “infused with politics.” Around 30 Democrats, encouraged by the White House, intend to skip the joint session in a show of pique over the supposed affront to President Obama, who is offended that the Israeli leader accepted House Speaker John Boehner’s invitation to address Congress on the nuclear talks with Iran. Reasonable people can debate whether Netanyahu is really guilty of a breach of protocol in not seeking Obama’s approval first — or if that is merely a pretext for a president who has long detested Netanyahu, a gifted communicator whose Churchillian warnings about the Iranian threat the administration wants to undercut.

Richard Kemp: Netanyahu, Churchill and Congress: Trying to Avert War—There are striking similarities between the objectives of Churchill’s speech nearly 75 years ago and Netanyahu’s today; both with no less purpose than to avert global conflagration. And, like Churchill’s in the 1930s, Netanyahu’s is the lone voice among world leaders today. There is no doubt abut Iran’s intent. It has been described as a nuclear Auschwitz. Israel is not the only target of Iranian violence. Iran has long been making good on its promises to mobilize Islamic forces against the US, as well as the UK and other American allies. Attacks directed and supported by Iran have killed an estimated 1,100 American troops in Iraq in recent years. Iran provided direct support to Al Qaeda in the 9/11 attacks. Between 2010 and 2013, Iran either ordered or allowed at least three major terrorist plots against the US and Europe to be planned from its soil. Fortunately, all were foiled. Iran’s ballistic missile program, inexplicably outside the scope of current P5+1 negotiations, brings Europe into Iran’s range, and future development will extend Tehran’s reach to the US.

Algemeiner Staff: Boehner Says Demand for Participation in Netanyahu’s Congress Speech is Unprecedented—The office of House Speaker John Boehner revealed that demand for tickets to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s upcoming speech to a joint session of Congress is sky high. So high in fact that it has outpaced any joint meeting since he was elected speaker, with 10 times as many requests than there are seats available, Politico reported on Sunday. The speech, set for Tuesday morning, has been the source of intense friction between the White House, and its allies and the Israeli prime minister.

JNS.org: More Than 70% of US Legislators Skipping Netanyahu’s Speech Endorsed by J Street—More than 70 percent of the federal legislators who have announced their intent to skip Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s March 3 speech to a joint session of Congress about the Iranian nuclear threat are endorsed by the self-labeled “pro-Israel, pro-peace” lobby J Street. J Street has endorsed 18 of 24 House of Representatives members and two of four U.S. senators who are skipping Netanyahu’s speech, according to the lobby’s announcements of endorsements for elections in 2010, 2012, and 2014. In advance of Netanyahu’s speech, J Street has distributed an online petition opposing the speech on the grounds that the prime minister of Israel “is not the spokesman for all Jews.”

Josh Rogin: Senators Challenge Obama with New Iran Bill—A bipartisan group of senators introduced new legislation Friday to mandate congressional review of any nuclear deal the Obama administration strikes with Iran. The “Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015” would require President Obama to submit any nuclear deal with Iran to Congress for a 60-day review period, during which the administration would have to wait on implementing most parts of the deal. During that time, Congress would have the opportunity to vote on the deal, although there is no explicit requirement that it do so. The new bill was finalized after three weeks of intense negotiations between Senate Foreign Relations Committee chiefs Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and Robert Menendez (D-N.J.). “If a nuclear deal is reached, Congress will have an opportunity to review the agreement and, more importantly, ensure its compliance after it goes into effect. This legislation establishes that vital review and oversight process,” Menendez told me. Importantly, the new Corker-Menendez bill would require that the administration share with Congress all the details of any nuclear deal with Iran and report on its verification. “I believe Congress should weigh in on the content of the deal given the centrality of the congressional sanctions to the entire negotiation and the significant security interests involved,” Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) told me.  Also see “Obama to Veto Bill Letting Congress Weigh In on Iran Deal” and “Statement on White House Veto Threat Against Bipartisan Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act”.

Ray Takeyh: The Strategic Genius of Iran’s Supreme Leader—After years of defiance, Khamenei seems to appreciate that his most advantageous path to nuclear arms is through an agreement. To continue to build up his atomic infrastructure without the protective umbrella of an agreement exposes Iran to economic sanctions and the possibility of military retribution. As Khamenei held firm, however, the great powers grew wobbly. With the advent of the Joint Plan of Action in November 2013, Washington conceded to Iran’s enrichment at home and agreed that eventually that enrichment capacity could be industrialized. The most important concession that Khamenei’s negotiators have won is the idea of a sunset clause. Upon the expiration of that clause, there would be no legal limits on Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Moreover, once a deal is transacted, the most essential sanctions against Iran will evaporate. It is unlikely that Europeans, much less China or Russia, would agree to their reconstitution should Iran be caught cheating. Iran’s achievements today are a tribute to the genius of Khamenei. He has routinely entered negotiations with the weakest hand and emerged in the strongest position.

Ahmed Al-Haj: First Iran Flight Arrives in Rebel-Held Yemeni Capital— The first direct flight from Iran to the rebel-held Yemeni capital has arrived, as the country’s Shiite rebels formalize ties with the regional Shiite powerhouse. Yemeni airport, security and transportation officials greeted the flight Sunday, an Airbus 310 carrying Iranians including aid workers from the Iranian Red Crescent. The Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, signed an agreement with Iranian authorities in Tehran Saturday to establish 14 direct flights per week between the two countries.

Ben Cohen: I’m So Bored With the Obama Administration—For many of our current influencers—magazines like Vox, think tanks like the Center for American Progress, NGOs like Human Rights Watch—this state of affairs is quite delightful. In Obama, America has a president who believes that humility should be the first rule of American foreign policy. The true test of moral fortitude, you see, lies not in what America does to other countries, including those which routinely abuse and persecute their own populations, but in what it doesn’t do. Hence the Obama administration’s caving in to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Hence its disregard for the worsening human rights situation in China. Hence its insistence on lauding the Iranian regime’s newly found “moderation,” despite the fact that more dissidents have been executed under President Hassan Rouhani than under his predecessor, the Holocaust-denying Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. I’ve made these and similar points many time before, and frankly, I’m getting bored of repeating them. And I’ve figured out why. It’s because I’m bored—SO bored—with the Obama administration.

Soeren Kern: Austria Passes Reforms to 1912 Islam Law—The new law, which the Austrian government says could serve as a model for the rest of Europe, seeks to reduce outside meddling by prohibiting foreign funding for mosques, imams and Muslim organizations in Austria. It also stresses that Austrian law must take precedence over Islamic Sharia law for Muslims living in the country. The government has met all of the demands put forth by Muslim groups in the country. The Turkish government has expressed outrage at the financing ban, which it says amounts to “Islamophobia.” “Countries cannot have their own version of Islam. Islam is universal and its sources are clear. … [E]fforts taken by state leaders to create a version of Islam that is particular to their own countries are futile.” — Mehmet Görmez, Head of Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate. The massive demographic and religious shift underway in Austria, traditionally a Roman Catholic country, appears irreversible. In Vienna, Muslim students already outnumber Catholic students at middle and secondary schools and are on the verge of overtaking Catholics in elementary schools. At the same, time Austria has emerged as a major base for radical Islam.

SnyderTalk Comment: I don’t know if the changes in Austrian law will solve the problem, but it’s a step in the right direction.

As for Mehmet Görmez, Head of Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate, his comment is off-the-wall.  It’s obvious that there are many versions of Islam since disparate Islamist group members kill each other over them every day.  And what about the great Sunni-Shia divide?

Görmez should get his act together and his facts straight.

Daily Sabah: President Erdoğan in Saudi Arabia in bid to boost bilateral ties— Even though experts do not expect a major change in the country’s policies under King Salman’s rule, they anticipate that Saudi Arabia will review its stance on certain regional issues. On Erdoğan’s visit to Riyadh, political analysts studying the Middle East and Gulf countries highlighted the regional impacts of recovering relations between the two countries. Erdoğan’s visit is seen as an indicator of recovering relations between Ankara and Riyadh that first surfaced when Erdoğan attended the funeral for late King Abdullah in January, suspending his African trip to head to Saudi Arabia. As soon as the death of King Abdullah was announced by Saudi officials, Erdoğan suspended his African tour for a day and attended the funeral. Also, a day of mourning was declared in Turkey following the death of the Saudi king. These steps are perceived as conciliatory gestures by Turkey, which is eager to leave political disagreements aside and foster better bilateral relations.

Times Live: Russia changed forever by Nemtsov murder— “The reaction to the murder of Boris Nemtsov turned out to be as extraordinary as the politician himself,” wrote the Kommersant business daily in a front page article that ran alongside a photo of Nemtsov carried at Sunday’s memorial march. Organisers said that 70,000 people marched through central Moscow, crossing the bridge where Nemtsov was shot, a turnout that Kommersant said had not been reached since the mass opposition rallies of 2011 against President Vladimir Putin’s return to the Kremlin. Nemtsov’s murder within sight of the Kremlin walls “crossed a psychological boundary, after which Russia will inevitably be different,” wrote the business daily Vedomosti in a front-page editorial.

SnyderTalk Comment: The Russians have demonstrated a capacity for accepting atrocities.  Will this murder make a significant difference?  It could, but I doubt it.

AFP: Kim Jong Un reportedly tells North Korean army to ‘prepare for war’ with US— North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has urged his army to prepare for war with the United States and its allies, state media said Saturday, as Pyongyang ramps up the rhetoric ahead of US-South Korea military drills. Kim’s comments came after South Korea and the United States Friday conducted a joint naval drill involving 10 South Korean warships and a US Aegis destroyer, ahead of the launch of large-scale military exercises that have enraged the North. “The prevailing situation where a great war for national reunification is at hand requires all the KPA (Korean People’s Army) units to become (elite) Guard Units fully prepared for war politically and ideologically, in military technique and materially”, he was quoted by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) as saying. North Korea regularly ratchets up hostile rhetoric at times of joint US-South Korea military exercises that spark a sharp surge in tensions on the divided peninsula.

David Siman-Tov and Yoram Schweitzer: Israel against Hizbollah: Between Overt and Covert Warfare— The violent battle between Israel and Hizbollah in Lebanon and Syria, and perhaps even outside the Middle East, can be expected to continue and perhaps escalate in the coming year, given the attempts by Syria and Iran to expand their areas of influence in southern Syria and the Syrian Golan Heights. The declaration by Revolutionary Guards officials that Iran will respond to an Israeli operation might translate not only into Iranian support for Hizbollah operations, but also attempts to carry out terrorist attacks abroad, since there is full coordination between Iran and Hizbollah. Israel’s goal, which at this stage is apparently the goal of Hizbollah and Iran as well, is to conduct the struggle for influence without being dragged into a war. This article discusses Israel’s methods for confronting Hizbollah, and examines how the strategy chosen by Israel to confront the challenge on the northern front affects the Hizbollah response.

Michael Bastasch: Antarctic Sea Ice Did The Exact Opposite Of What Models Predicted—Climate models can be good tools for predicting future sea ice levels — unless, of course, they are completely wrong. In the case of Antarctica, the climate models were dead wrong, according to a new study by Chinese scientists published in the journal Cryosphere. The study found that most climate models predicted Antarctic sea ice coverage would shrink as the world warmed and greenhouse gas levels increased. The opposite happened. Most climate models analyzed in the study predicted Antarctica would shrink between 1979 and 2005, but instead south pole sea ice levels increased during that time. Going a step further, sea ice levels have only increased since 2006, hitting all-time highs for sea ice coverage in September of last year.

SnyderTalk Comment: You should read my novel, Stand!  It’s an eye-opener.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Genesis 50: 22-26

22 Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father’s household, and Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. 23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph’s knees. 24 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob.” 25 Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely take care of you, and you shall carry my bones up from here.” 26 So Joseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years; and he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.

SnyderTalk Comment: Read His Name is Yahweh.  Yahweh’s promises are inviolable.  They will be fulfilled—every single one of them.  Under no circumstances should anyone try to prevent Yahweh from doing what He promised to do.  They can’t win, but they can lose big if they stand in His way.

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite.
