Of Course Jewish People Should Visit the Temple Mount
Writing for the Jerusalem Post in an article titled “Should Jews visit the Temple Mount?” Moshe Dann said,
For millennia, the site of the First and Second Temples has been the subject of a halachic (Jewish law) question: where are Jews permitted to walk on the Temple Mount? Rabbis agree that because of the sanctity of the Temple, Jews must not enter the area where the Temples stood. They differ, however, about where the Temples were located, and whether the prohibition applies to the specific site of the Temples, or to the entire Temple Mount.
The First and Second Temples were small buildings, about 50 meters square, which contained an inner sanctuary, the Holy of Holies, into which the High Priest entered once a year, on Yom Kippur. The Temple Mount is nearly 1,500 square meters, and entering the golden Dome of the Rock, a Muslim shrine, and its surrounding area – around 200 sq.m. – is forbidden.
It is recorded that Rabbi Moses ben Maimon (Maimonides/Rambam, 1135-1204) prayed on the Temple Mount at a synagogue that had remained from an earlier (pre-Crusader) period. Rabbi Moses ben Nachman (Ramban) wrote that he prayed on the Temple Mount when he arrived in Jerusalem in 1267.
The current halachic prohibition against ascending the Temple Mount originates in the Ottoman period and was restated during the Mandate period by chief rabbis Avraham Ha-Cohen Kook and Isaac Herzog, and halachic authorities like R’ Yisrael Meir Kagan (author of “Hafetz Hayim”). Their position was consistent with the Ottoman and British governments’ and Wakf (Islamic Authority) policy of excluding Jews from the Temple Mount and restricting access to and use of the Western Wall.
The question that Dann posed should be a no-brainer. The fact that he felt compelled to ask it is troublesome.
I’m not criticizing Dann. The issue underlying the question is the source of great controversy, but as I suggested, the answer should be obvious.
The Economist says that Jewish people who want to pray on the Temple Mount are “militants”. That’s a ridiculous assertion that was presented rather nonchalantly as a well-known truth. It rings of anti-Semitism to me, and it certainly doesn’t square with the facts. I expect more from The Economist than radical rants and political diatribe. Anti-Semites come in all varieties, and some of them work for “respectable” publications.
Israel’s Sephardi Chief Rabbi, Yitzhak Yosef, says that Jews should not visit the Temple Mount. That’s another radical view that assumes Yahweh will be offended if His children come to the only place on Earth where He said that His Name will reside forever.
Of course Jewish people should visit the Temple Mount. They should walk on it, pray on it, and think about what it will become. They shouldn’t worship it because it’s a place—not Yahweh, and worship is reserved for Him and Him alone.

In a nutshell, this is what the articles tell us:
- Until about 300 years ago, Jews prayed on the Temple Mount regularly and without restriction.
- No one can say exactly what the current “status quo” on the Temple Mount is. Even so, it is generally believed that it means Muslims should have free access to the Temple Mount and the privilege of doing anything on it that they want while Jews must have restricted access and cannot pray on the Temple Mount no matter what.
- Today Jewish people worship and pray at the Kotel or the Western wall, but it’s just a retaining wall that was built by King Herod.
- Thanks to Israel’s Defense Minister during the 1967 Six-Day War, Moshe Dayan, the Israeli people failed to take control of the Temple Mount in 1967 when they probably could have done it with only minor objections.
- The current prohibition against Jewish people praying on the Temple Mount was put in place after the Six-Day War. That means the so-called “status quo” is of relatively recent vintage.
- According to Jerusalem expert and historian Nadav Shragai, “In retrospect, the concession Dayan made in the name of the Jewish People was indeed immense, colossal, almost inconceivable. The Jewish State entrusted its holiest place to a competing religion – the Muslim religion, for which the place is only the third in holiness, and gave up the right to pray there.”
- The Dome of the Rock that sits atop the Temple Mount was built for Jewish people—not for Muslims. “The Al-Aksa Mosque was built as a Muslim house of prayer outside the boundaries of the original Temple Mount, and therefore it points southward towards Mecca. And at the request of the Jews, Omar built the Dome of the Rock sanctuary to serve as a house of prayer for the Jews. This was after the Jews showed him the site where the Holy Temple had stood – and it does not point to Mecca.”
The Israeli people should control the Temple Mount right now. The very idea that Jews and Christians aren’t allowed to pray on the Temple Mount is patently absurd.
The Temple Mount problem won’t go away. Rabbis’ opinions about what Jews can and can’t do on the Temple Mount aren’t Torah. Journalists write to attract readers. For them, the Temple Mount issue is little more than a tool for increasing/maintaining circulation. Most policitians want glory, and political solutions to the Temple Mount controversy won’t work because you can’t trust Islamists to keep their word.
The Temple Mount issue is here to stay until it is dealt with decisively, and only Yahweh can do that. His position is the one that matters.
Yahweh said, “For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that My Name may be there forever, and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually”? (2 Chronicles 7: 16) He was talking about the Temple Mount.
King Solomon built the First Temple on Mount Moriah—the Temple Mount. He said, “The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.” (Ecclesiastes 12: 13-14)
Not taking control of the Temple Mount in 1967 was evil. The cost of failing to do it has been very high, and it increases with every passing day.

Adam Levick: Economist Says Jews Wanting to Pray at Temple Mount Are ‘Militants’—In a great example of the media’s use of language to blur moral differences within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, The Economist expanded the common understanding of the word “militant” – a word favored by those who fear that “terrorist” is too judgmental a term for those committing violence for political ends – to include Jews wanting to peacefully pray at Judaism’s holiest site. An article published on November 17 titled ‘The trouble at the Mount‘ included the following passage: “THE Temple Mount in Jerusalem is one of the world’s most explosive bits of real-estate. It has started to rumble again in recent weeks, with demands by Jewish militants to extend prayer rights, riots by Palestinians and the killing of several Israelis in knife or car-ramming attacks.” So, the term “Jewish militant” includes: 1. A Jew who wishes to extend prayer rights to Jews at the Temple Mount, Judaism’s holiest site.
Yehudit Tayar: The Temple Mount belongs to the Jewish people—Shavua tov- let us hope and pray that it truly will be one. Following the reports regarding the security situation in Israel and the sad reality of our governments not protecting our basic rights as Jews to pray in the most Holy sites of our heritage I can only presume that the violence will not only continue but the appetite to murder Jews will grow. All of us who are realists know that what the Prime Minister refers to as “status quo” will never appease our enemies and on the contrary if finally it was declared openly that the Temple Mount is the site of the Holy Temples of the Jewish Nation and that it is expected for Jews to be able to freely go up and pray our enemies would realize that Jerusalem, and indeed the Land of Israel is never going to be handed over to the Moslem world.
WND Exclusive: Arab ban on Muslim Brotherhood death knell for CAIR?—… And earlier this week, the United Arab Emirates joined Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Russia in outlawing the Muslim Brotherhood and many of its subsidiary organizations. UAE took the additional step of designating two U.S. Muslim Brotherhood front groups — the Washington-based Council on American Islamic Relations, or CAIR, and the Muslim American Society, or MAS – as terrorist organizations on par with ISIS and al-Qaida. CAIR is cited several times in the text of the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act as a Brotherhood-controlled entity.
SnyderTalk Comment: This is an encouraging move, but it’s long overdue.
For decades, the Muslim Brotherhood has been recruiting supporters and raising money to instigate terrorist acts around the world. President Obama welcomed the Muslim Brotherhood with open arms and appointed Muslim Brotherhood supporters to important policy posts in his administration where they helped to design the Obama Middle East strategy.
It started in Cairo, Egypt with an apology tour, and it turned the U.S. into a less-than-reliable ally of the only true friend the U.S. has in the Middle East—Israel. Saying that the people of Israel have suffered under Obama is an understatement. Today, thanks to Obama, Jerusalem has become a powder keg, Hamas is strengthening its grip on Gaza and planning a takeover of the West Bank, and Hezbollah is targeting Israeli communities in the North.
The U.S. role in bringing about these outcomes is beyond dispute and disgraceful. We have a lot to answer for.
Haviv Rettig Gur: Why Netanyahu thinks blaming Abbas is vital for peace—After two Palestinian men murdered five and injured eight others in a brutal terror attack at a Jerusalem synagogue Tuesday, Israeli leaders did not search very far or very long for an overall culprit. “This is the direct result of the incitement being led by Hamas and Abu Mazen, incitement which the international community is irresponsibly ignoring,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared in a statement soon after the attack. By placing “Abu Mazen,” the nom de guerre of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, in the same sentence as Hamas, Netanyahu’s accusation went beyond merely warning about Palestinian incitement. Like Hamas, the prime minister seemed to say, Abbas is no partner for peace talks. Much of Netanyahu’s government agrees. According to a statement issued by Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman, “the responsibility [for Tuesday’s attack] rests entirely with the chairman of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas. Abbas has deliberately turned the conflict into a religious conflict between Jews and Muslims and the systematic incitement he leads against Jews, including his statement that impure Jews may not enter the Temple Mount, provides the guidance for such heinous attacks.”
Stephen M. Flatow: Talk is Cheap: U.S. Response to Jerusalem Synagogue Attack Disappoints— The scenario has been repeated more times than I can remember: Palestinian terrorists murder Israelis. The Obama administration condemns the attack. And that’s it. No change in U.S. policy, no penalties or consequences for those who encourage and praise the killers. The Palestinians are, quite literally, getting away with murder. Secretary of State John Kerry condemned the Nov. 18 slaughter of four Jews in a synagogue in Jerusalem’s Har Nof neighborhood. He even acknowledged that it was “a pure result of incitement, of calls for days of rage” by the Palestinian leadership. Indeed it was. It’s too bad it took a massacre to get Secretary Kerry to admit that. If only he had spoken out against Palestinian incitement weeks or months ago. But “speaking out” is not enough. Bland verbal condemnations of incitement don’t make any difference. Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas and has colleagues don’t take America’s words seriously. There have to be actions. The Palestinian leaders need to see that there will be real consequences for their incitement.
Ruthie Blum: Paving the way for Islamic State in Israel— During morning prayers at a Jerusalem synagogue on Tuesday, two Arabs with massacre on their minds entered the premises armed with guns and axes. They managed to kill four worshippers and wound several others before being shot down by police. Immediately this was reported in the media as a revenge attack for the death of an Arab bus driver (employed by the Israeli company, Egged) on Sunday night. A forensic examination, conducted on Monday in the presence of an Arab coroner, showed that the deceased had hanged himself. But his parents insisted he was murdered by Jews. Riots ensued. But then, mass protests against perceived Israeli crimes have been going on for months. Each is given a specific label, but they are all part of what I would call the “Temple Mount Intifada.”
David Pollock: U.S. Should Cut Aid to Palestinians for Supporting Terrorists—The synagogue massacre by Palestinian terrorists in Jerusalem on Tuesday was an act of premeditated murder in cold blood, not part of some “cycle of violence.” That three of these entirely innocent victims were also U.S. citizens does not make the crime any worse, but it does provide an extra reason for the U.S. to respond in the right way. The U.S. government should now act to hold to account those responsible for this horror. While Abbas personally condemned this terrorist attack, at the same time he allows his advisers, his ruling Fatah political party, and his official media to praise and glorify these terrorists as heroes, martyrs and more. His government pays convicted terrorists and their families regular stipends. And Abbas himself just wrote a formal letter of condolence to the family of the Palestinian terrorist who shot and almost killed Rabbi Yehudah Glick just a few days ago. This means that the U.S. should, in line with existing U.S. law, move immediately to cut some of our very substantial aid to the Palestinian Authority – unless Abbas publicly repudiates and unequivocally ends this practice of hypocrisy and deception about incitement to murder.
Yehuda Yaakov: Don’t Rush into a Deal with Iran— I thought I had seen it all. Having dealt with preventing the development of Iran’s nuclear program for the better part of a decade, I thought nothing could surprise me. I realized recently just how wrong I was. As the Nov. 24 deadline on negotiations approaches, the United States and other major players on the world stage seek to strike a deal. Meanwhile, Iran’s leaders seem uninterested in peaceful solutions and continue to say as much publicly. Case in point: This item that appeared on Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s social media account recently: “Why should & how can Israel be eliminated?” His question, inflammatory in its own right, followed with several more queries: Why should the Zionist regime be eliminated? What is the proper way of eliminating Israel? What is the most urgent action to take for military confrontation with Israel? The list went on, but I prefer not to give Khamenei an additional platform. What may have been the most revealing question in the series was the final one: “Why do we oppose compromise proposals?”
John Irish: France tempers Iran nuclear stance in nod to wider diplomatic needs—A year after France scuppered a deal on Iran’s nuclear programme it is taking a softer stance in current talks, encouraged by a more inclusive U.S. approach and the knowledge that failure this year could have grim repercussions across the broader region. France, a U.N. Security Council veto-holder, has long held out for strict terms trading a loosening of international sanctions on Iran’s oil-based economy in return for commitments by Tehran to show its nuclear work is as peaceful as it insists. The discovery last year that the U.S. was holding secret talks with the Iranians was an opportunity for France, by saying ‘no’ to a deal, to assert itself internationally and rebuke Washington for backing down on bombing Syria as punishment for using chemical arms. It also helped Paris to cement new commercial ties with Gulf Arab states. This time round however a failed agreement would have potentially dire consequences given Iran’s important role among international powers trying to push Islamic State out of Iraq and Syria and stabilise other parts of the Middle East.
Algemeiner Staff: New Scandal Envelops UNRWA as Employees Praise Jerusalem Synagogue Atrocity—Among the many Palestinians who openly celebrated Tuesday’s terrorist atrocity at a synagogue in Jerusalem, during which four worshippers and a police officer were brutally murdered, were several employees of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA.) UNRWA is a body devoted solely to Palestinian refugees from the 1948 war as well as their descendants who, unlike the children of refugees in other conflict situations, legally inherit refugee status. Among its responsibilities is the education of Palestinian children, often taught by local teachers who have no incentive to keep their political beliefs – however extreme – outside of the classroom. Popular Jewish blogger Elder of Ziyon has amassed evidence of UNRWA employees lauding the Jerusalem attack, among them Maha al Mosa, an UNRWA teacher in Syria who prayed for the two terrorists to be accepted in “paradise” as “martyrs,” Ibrahim Hajjar, another teacher based in Hebron, who published a poem praising the terrorists, and another Syrian-based teacher who, using a pseudonym, posted a celebratory picture of Adolf Hitler on his Facebook page.

UNRWA and other U.N. units in the Middle East reflect the U.N. General Assembly. It’s pro-Muslim and anti-Israel to the core.
David Gergen: Obama’s dangerous move on immigration—…The White House has repeatedly pointed to immigration-related executive orders issued by past presidents, notably Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, to support the legality of President Obama’s order and to palliate its partisan sting. Both the executive orders cited, however, can be distinguished from the case at hand. Reagan granted amnesty to 100,000 undocumented immigrants to close a loophole in the comprehensive immigration reform bill passed in 1986. Bush’s order, which granted amnesty to at most 1.5 million people (although the actual number who benefited is likely much smaller), also attempted to clean up a piece of legislation. As Mark Krikorian writes in National Review, the Reagan and Bush examples were presidents trying to implement congressional directives, as is constitutionally permissible, whereas the current action is the President telling Congress “I’m going to implement my own directives”….For better or worse, Americans have always expected that in addressing big, tough domestic issues, Congress and the president had to work together to find resolution. For a president to toss aside such deep traditions of governance is a radical, imprudent step. When a president in day-to-day operations can decide which laws to enforce and which to ignore, where are the limits on his power? Where are the checks and balances so carefully constructed in the Constitution?

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now. There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy.
