Jonathan Tobin—Obama and the Middle East Mess:

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict worsened today as Hamas launched more missiles into Israel, including one long-range rocket aimed at Tel Aviv. Israel responded by calling up more reserves and striking back at the terrorist launching points. But while the world reproaches both sides today President Obama reminded us why he deserves a good deal of the blame for the mess.

Obama has largely held himself aloof from the conflict in recent weeks other than warning Israel to show “restraint” in response to both terror attacks and a missile barrage on its territory. But he did choose to contribute an op-ed to the left-wing Israeli newspaper Haaretz today as part of its “Israel Conference on Peace” in which he extolled the two-state solution and declared “peace is the only true path to security for Israel and the Palestinians.”

Despite the boost from the president and the appearance of Israeli President Shimon Peres, the Haaretz conference will be probably best remembered for proving just how intolerant the left can be. To his credit, Economy Minister Naftali Bennett accepted an invitation to speak to the forum but the leader of the right-wing Jewish Home Party was repeatedly interrupted by insults from the crowd of peaceniks calling him a “murderer” and “fascist.” As the Jerusalem Post reports (Haaretz has yet to file a story on the incident on its website), when he concluded his effort “dozens of people” stormed toward him. While the minister’s bodyguards fended off most of the attackers, one managed to get close enough to punch him in the back before he was whisked away. This is yet another reminder that for the left, especially the Israeli left, tolerance for opposing views is not consistent with their idea of democracy.

Amos Yadlin: Operation Protective Edge:The Goals, and the Strategy to Achieve Them— The strategic purpose of Operation ProtectiveEdge is derived from the state’s obligation to fulfill its basic obligation to protect its citizens and enable them to pursue a normal way of life. Restoring deterrence to achieve another period of quiet was a major strategic achievement of prior operations and is a primary objective of the current campaign. • The operation must be directed mainly against the military wing of Hamas and the other terrorist organizations, and strike a severe blow against their commanders, operatives, launching capabilities, and production capacity. • The military objective should not be to occupy Gaza for the purpose of toppling Hamas. Hamas is weak politically and economically, and it should be weakened militarily as well. A harsh blow against Hamas to achieve deterrence and deny it the ability to grow stronger in the future is the correct objective. However, turning Gaza into an area without a government that can be held responsible would be a strategic error.

Al-Qassam – Hamas: Hamas: No Calm without Ending Gaza Siege—The head of Hamas’s foreign relations Osama Hamdan said that his movement will not accept any ceasefire in light of the continued siege on Gaza. Hamdan described the continued security coordination between the PA and the occupation [Israel] as a flagrant betrayal of national constants. He pointed out that certain elements within the PA had supported the Israeli story about the recent events by holding the Palestinian resistance fully responsible for the escalation. Hamdan, however, ruled out the possibility of a large-scale Israeli aggression on Gaza.

Benny Avni: Is This the Last Stand for Hamas?— Can Hamas survive the latest onslaught in Gaza? The terrorist organization has clearly learned from past confrontations and is trying to hone its military abilities in the current exchange. But as the confrontation heats up, questions are being asked about the organization’s capabilities and to what extent its recent loss of support from outside Gaza has weakened it.

Dror Eydar: Blind to reality— And then the rocket was intercepted. That is, the rocket that was fired as a greeting from the besieged Gaza Strip to the peace conference hosted by the Not-Our-Land newspaper Haaretz in Tel Aviv, the first Hebrew city. Ah, if only we’d discussed peace, we wouldn’t need a sword now. So what have we been doing for the past 20 years? The Palestinian Authority, Camp David, the disengagement from Gaza, and peace proposals by then Prime Ministers Ehud Olmert and Ehud Barak? How symbolic that this ridiculous conference was taking place just as half our citizens were heading for shelters because of rocket attacks from Gaza (participants in the conference also had to run for their lives.) When you hear the sirens, think, for example, about these words from Shimon Peres when he was Olmert’s deputy prime minister, immediately after the disengagement in mid-2005: “The fact that we left Gaza, was it to bolster Hamas? The opposite.”

Lonnie C. Mings: Clueless in Gaza— Israeli troops are poised on the edge of Gaza to invade the area if the rockets don’t stop soon. The problem is, the Hamas leaders of Gaza don’t seem to realize that the “new Samson”—Israel—is far from “eyeless” and that they have the ability to retake Gaza if they are pushed too far. In their blind hatred of Israel, Hamas leaders recklessly rush on in the vain attempt to obliterate Israel. Hamas is going to pay, but they seem to be “clueless” as to the disaster that awaits them.

Lt. Col. (ret.) Michael Segall: Long-Range Iranian-Made Missiles Used during “Operation Protective Edge”—The rocket fire at major cities in Israel’s center and south re-emphasizes Iran’s supplying of missiles; training; and providing missile manufacturing technology to the terrorist organizations. Iran also plays a negative role in any attempt to reach regional diplomatic agreements. The renewal of combat is clear proof that Iran and the terrorist organizations took advantage of periods of calm to smuggle large amounts of “balance-breaking” weaponry via the sea and the Sinai, and to train terrorist organization members in Lebanon.

Wall Street Journal Editorial: Iran’s Hand in Gaza—More than 200 Palestinian rockets have descended on Israel in recent days, triggering an Israeli counteroffensive. But as the drama plays out in the Gaza Strip and southern Israel, it’s worth noting the role Iran – now under new and allegedly moderate leadership – has played in this latest spasm of violence.   In March, Israeli naval commandos interdicted a Panamanian-flagged ship, the Klos C, off the Sudanese coast in the Red Sea. The ship’s cargo contained 40 M-302 surface-to-surface rockets, 181 mortar shells and some 400,000 rounds of 7.62 caliber ammunition-all concealed under bags of Iranian cement. The weapons were almost certainly intended for Iran’s terrorist clients in Gaza. Tehran denies any role in the shipment. But a recent classified report from the U.N. Security Council’s Sanctions Committee effectively confirms it. The panel found that Bandar Abbas, a southern Iranian port, “is established as the origin of the shipment of 100 containers of cement, including the 20 containing weapons and ammunition.”

Josh Rogin: Assad’s ‘Machinery of Death’ Worst Since the Nazis—Tens of thousands of photographs showing the Syrian government’s torture, murder, and mass starvation are evidence of the kind of systematic atrocities not seen Hitler’s Nazi regime exterminated millions during World War II, according to the State Department’s top war crimes official, Stephen Rapp, the State Department’s ambassador-at-large for War Crimes and director of the Office of Global Criminal Justice. “This is solid evidence of the kind of machinery of cruel death that we haven’t seen frankly since the Nazis,” he said. “If it is as it appears thus far, we’re talking about more than 10,000 individuals being killed in custody over the period from 2011 to 2013.

Zalman Shoval: True colors of the Middle East— Professor Zbigniew Brzezinski, who served as national security adviser during the Carter administration and is still considered a prominent foreign policy expert in Washington, used to say, “The road to Baghdad goes through Jerusalem.” He meant that unless the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was resolved, the Arab and Muslim world would continue to turn its back on the West in general and the United States in particular, and the instability in the region would persist. Brzezinski’s idea of the “solution” to the conflict was to end the “occupation,” accept the Palestinian demands, form a Palestinian state and, of course, cease all settlement activity. Various Middle East experts in the State Department and White House hung on his every word, as did many political analysts in the American and international media.

Xinhua: Turkey Condemns Israel’s Military Operation in Gaza—  Turkey on Tuesday called for Israel to immediately cease its military operation in Gaza, condemning the “mass punishment” of people in the coastal strip. “The military operation that Israel has launched against Gaza will result in extending the pain that the oppressed Gaza people, who have been struggling to continue their lives under difficult conditions for years,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

SnyderTalk Comment: Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is a hypocrite, a demagogue, and a liar.  It’s no wonder that Erdoğan and Barack Obama are such good friends.

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Genesis 17: 15-22

15 Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16 I will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.” 17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Will a child be born to a man one hundred years old? And will Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” 18 And Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before You!” 19 But God said, “No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. 20 As for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I will bless him, and will make him fruitful and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this season next year.” 22 When He finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
