Steve Apfel—David and Goliath syndrome:

If the media is fair, analysts unerring and politicians even-handed, then ‘disproportionate’ is what Israel at war does best. If it must feud with neighbours why be heavy-handed. Tit-for-tat is enough. We’d rather Israel did not engage in ugly cycles of violence, but keep them down. Careful does it. A forty-to-one casualty score is barbarically out of bounds. A Yid with heavy weapons is horrible to behold. One who plays Rambo with them is disgusting beyond words.

Cartoons depicting Israeli acts in the Gaza strip speak to us like this, at times close to those very words. Column writers and news anchors, harping likewise on high tolls, adopt airs only a mite more disguised. Casualty tolls are skewed in favour of a people that deserve worse; considerably worse. Our media as good as utters sentiments of the kind. “The toll is unbalanced. The people of Israel get off too lightly. For justice sake, there should be more of them and fewer Palestinians killed and maimed.” It would seem that Israel critics feel that things are upside down when Jews win wars, big or small, at too low a cost.

The skeptic who may laugh at such infantile nonsense has only to page through cartoons from the time of Israel’s “Operation Cast Lead” in Gaza. Reports and editorials are nearly as explicit. Infantile and ugly connotations attend the word “disproportionate”. Take for example three media men, heavyweight and acclaimed. One is a filmmaker, the second an editor, the third a correspondent and Middle East expert. Two of them have won awards.

Oded Eran: The Palestinian-Jordanian-Israeli Triangle— On one level, Jordan and Israel are developing a relationship based on shared economic interests and the need to cope with political and security constraints resulting from the turmoil in the region over the past three and a half years. At the same time, because of developments anticipated in the wake of the freeze of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, the internal Palestinian political process, the continued struggle in Syria, and the possible implications of a crisis with regional dimensions in the context of the Iranian nuclear program, the political leaderships in Jordan and Israel are likely to face difficult challenges and will need to demonstrate great restraint in their conduct. Israel’s effort to preserve its relationship with Jordan’s political-military leadership is highly important. As such, Israeli reactions to various actions and comments by Jordanian officials, even if they are justified, should be grounded in a comprehensive strategic view of Israel’s regional interests.

Treasury Minister Yair Lapid interviewed by David Horovitz: Do the Palestinians Really Want Their Own State?:

  • “There is a question that is haunting me which is whether the Palestinians really want to have their own state. I’m not sure about it.”
  • “The Palestinians are the first nation in history that are treating independence as a zero-sum game. They say either you give us 100% of what we want or we don’t want it at all. The United States was established as a shaky confederation of 13 states….Modern Italy was formed without Rome.”
  • “Look at the UN Resolution about the establishment of Israel: 55% of the territory, without the Western Wall, without big chunks of Jerusalem. But we acted according to the basic principles of nations that really want independence. We said, whatever they give us we’re going to take, and then we’re going to struggle over the details. This is what nations really do when they really want to go there.”
  • “But the Palestinians are saying: They’ve only offered us 94% of what we want territorially. We’re not going to take it. They’ve only offered us 94% of the self-government that we’ve asked for. We’re not going to take it. It’s either 100% or we’re not taking it at all.”
  • “You look at this and you ask yourself, maybe they don’t want it so much.”

Jonathan Spyer: Palestinian Magical Thinking—Palestinian nationalism in both its Fatah and Hamas variants rejects the possibility of accepting the permanence of Jewish statehood in any part of the area west of the Jordan River. For the Palestinian Authority, the nine-month period of negotiations came as an unwelcome interruption to a very different strategy to which it will now return: attempting to isolate and delegitimize Israel at international forums to induce it to make concessions in return for nothing. This strategy is unlikely to bear fruit, but its adoption follows a notable pattern in Palestinian politics – namely, the constant attempt to find an alternative to a negotiated peace based on compromise. The Palestinians see themselves as part of the local majority Arabic-speaking Sunni Muslim culture. From this point of view, the establishment of a non-Muslim sovereignty in Israel is not only an injustice, but also an anomaly, bound eventually to be defeated and disappear. So there is no need to reconcile to it.

Dr. Haim Shine: Peres’ delusional dream— In Israel, there is a small group of people, whose size is inversely proportional to its influence, who refuse to let themselves be confused by reality. For years, members of this group have worked relentlessly to convince Israelis that the Palestinians are right and that the State of Israel must do everything it can to placate them, including compromising our basic security interests. This group is led by President Shimon Peres, who tirelessly promotes, both at home and abroad, his dream of a new Middle East. In the U.S. and Europe, there is wide support for this vision, but what is there to be done about the residents of the region, both Jews and Arabs alike, who have to pay the price for it? Never before has there been a vision of peace that has cost so many lives. If this is what peace looks like, I wonder what is war.

Clifford D. May: Stopping a Nuclear Iran—Iran’s rulers are determined to acquire the ability to develop nuclear weapons and deliver them to targets anywhere in the world. Can America stop them? “The fear,” a former senior intelligence official told me, “is that the Iranians are going to pretend to give up their nuclear-weapons program – and we’re going to pretend to believe them.” While during the Cold War even the most hard-core Soviets understood that “mutually assured destruction” would not be in their interest, Iran’s theocrats may seriously believe that “martyrs” killed fighting “infidels” reap rewards in the afterlife. In other words: Deterrence is a dubious policy against those whose religious duty is to defeat the enemies of God.

Ronald S. Lauder: WhatsApp Ban Shows Iran’s True Colors— Republic apparently banned the popular WhatsApp messaging application, which is owned by Facebook, reportedly because Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is an “American Zionist” – a code word for “Jew.” The state-run Iranian News Agency attributed the ban to Abdolsamad Khorramabadi, head of Iran’s Committee on Internet Crimes. Soon after, however, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani tweeted that the ban was not true. Hard to tell what the truth is here. The Iranian government has been known to say one thing in Persian for internal consumption while saying something quite different in English to the rest of the world.

Eric Rozenman: Hijacking the Holocaust— Next month, participants in the Presbyterian Church’s biennial assembly will meet in Detroit. Calls for divestment from Israel are likely to be considered, supported by the infamous “Zionism Unsettled” study guide. Both Iran’s English-language propaganda arm, Press TV, and former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke endorsed the guide when it appeared early this year. Presbyterians for Middle East Peace, on the other hand, condemned the booklet as anti-Israel and anti-Jewish. David Borg, executive director of Christians United for Israel, called it a “wicked” work that tries to revive the Holocaust-discredited doctrine of “teaching contempt” for the Jews.

Udi Dekel and Orit Perlov: The Question of Identity in Jordan and the Peace Treaty with Israel: Jordanian Discourse on the Social Media— The upheavals in Jordan’s strategic environment have sparked a heated debate on the social media regarding the identity of the Hashemite kingdom and Jordan’s relations with Israel. The response to the killing of a Jordanian-Palestinian judge at the Allenby Bridge in March 2014 crossing by IDF soldiers presents an illustrative case study in this matter. Following the incident, three main trends were evident in the intensive discussions on the social media: 1. There are strong differences in approach between the various influential groups in Jordan – the Trans-Jordanians and the Palestinian Jordanians – on the question of identity and solidarity among “Jordanians” versus “Palestinians.” 2. The efforts by some Palestinians and opposition leaders in Jordan to mobilize public opinion and leverage the shooting incident for the purposes of escalating bilateral Israeli-Jordanian relations clearly failed. 3. The Jordanian-Israeli peace agreement remains of strategic importance in the eyes of the Trans-Jordanians.

Tammi Rossman-Benjamin and JNS.org: Growing Intimidation on Campus— When an African American student at San Jose State University who was racially harassed and bullied by his dormitory roommates came forward, university, county, and state officials began an investigation. Within days, prosecutors labeled it a hate crime, battery charges were filed against three of the roommates, and the university had suspended them. Within weeks, California State Assembly Speaker John Perez announced the creation of a Select Committee on Campus Climate, to look into this incident and find a way to prevent others like it. When a white male threw a beer at Trinity College sophomore Juan Hernandez and yelled, “Get off our campus,” Trinity launched an investigation and charges were brought against the perpetrator. When anti-gay remarks were written on message boards that hang on dorm-room doors, Elizabethtown College began an investigation, engaged the FBI, and disciplinary action was taken. Compare that to the situation for Jewish students. Over the last several years, Jewish students on campuses across the country have been physically, emotionally, and intellectually harassed, intimidated, threatened and bullied – not only by their fellow students but also by some of their professors.

Isi Leibler: J Street’s false martyrdom— Despite widespread predictions to the contrary, J Street failed dismally to gain admission into the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations. It was unable to obtain the constitutionally required two-thirds majority and could not even muster a simple majority. Only a third of the constituents supported its affiliation.

SnyderTalk Comment: J Street may be Israel’s worst enemy.  Why?  Because J Street is Jewish and is consistently on the wrong side of Israeli issues.  You might even say that J Street is anti-Israel.  Members of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations are not ignorant.

Huge Tunnel Bomb Kills Scores in Syria

SnyderTalk Comment: Two things stand out in this video:

  1. The people who were responsible for setting the bomb positioned themselves to take the video and now it is getting widespread distribution.  In other words, this is a publicity piece.
  2. In the background, you can hear someone screaming Allāhu akbar.  It means “God is great” or “God is the greatest”, and the person saying it isn’t referring to Yahweh.

A war is raging.  There are battles taking place in Syria where this video was taken, in Egypt, in Tunisia, in Libya, in Iraq, in Jordan, in Saudi Arabia, in Lebanon, in Turkey, in Ukraine, in Iran, in Russia, in the United States, and in other countries around the world, but the war is between Yahweh and His arch enemy.  The war won’t be over until Yahweh returns.

More than anything else, Yahweh’s arch enemy wants to destroy Israel.  In the end, Yahweh will win, but in the meantime, His enemy can do a lot of damage.

Do you know whose side you are on?  Do you know what your role is in the battles that are taking place near you?

Ted Turner said that there are 3 kinds of people in the world: people who make things happen, people who watch things happen, and people who wonder what happened.  What type of person are you?

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Genesis 6: 18-22

18 “But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. 20 Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. 21 As for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them.” 22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
