Itamar Marcus—Why Abbas thinks Jewish state is a ‘delusional myth’:

A major obstacle blocking progress toward an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority is Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s demand and PA President Mahmoud Abbas’s refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. The Jerusalem Post reported this week that US Secretary of State John Kerry thinks Israel’s demand is a mistake. The question is: Why are both sides so concerned about that which is already accepted internationally? As early as 1917, the Balfour Declaration supported the establishment of “a national home for the Jewish people.”

In 1922, the League of Nations confirmed the British Mandate to establish “a Jewish national home,” and UN resolution 181 in 1947 recommended the establishment of “a Jewish state.” Since Israel’s founding followed directly upon this international process anticipating a Jewish state, why, so many years later, does Israel demand and the PA refuse to restate the obvious? A recent declaration by Abbas sheds light on why PA recognition is essential for authentic peace and why the PA president refuses to grant it. In a speech in Morocco, Abbas defined Jewish history in Jerusalem as a “delusional myth” and claimed that Israel is trying to invent a Jewish history “by brute force.” (Official PA TV, January 17, 2014).

Abbas has a long tradition of denying Jewish history. In another talk he described Jewish history in Jerusalem as “illusions and legends” and referred to the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem as the “alleged Temple,” a term the PA uses to deny that it ever existed. (Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, August 22, 2012).

13--Perspectives 2

#####

Dan Margalit: Old world order— In the 69 years since the end of World War II and the establishment of the United Nations, a trend has emerged in which individual state sovereignty is steadily eroded. Countries were asked to hand over some authority to international organizations, leaving it to foreign hands. Surely, many global events have occurred that could have been improved with the establishment and backing of such international bodies. But it must be understood that such organizations are also a source of concern because, perhaps, certain countries are leaving their fates to be determined by others.

Prof. Abraham Ben-Zvi: Under Obama’s nose— In May 1977, U.S. President Jimmy Carter took the podium at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and joyfully declared the end of the Cold War. He told the audience that instead of focusing on an array of relations outlined by the large-bloc alignment, America’s foreign policy would henceforth strive toward advancing relations with the Third World. And yet despite the flowery words about the end of an era, the Soviet Union continued pursuing its oppositional policies versus Carter’s wimpish display of weakness, while simultaneously forming and leading the Arab rejectionist front that opposed Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s peace initiative. Only after Soviet forces invaded Afghanistan in December 1979 did the White House sober up from its illusions and launch a decisive strategy of punishment and renewed military preparation to confront the new challenge.

Yaakov Lappin: Are Hamas and Iran Reuniting?— Two years after parting ways due to differences over the Syrian civil war, Hamas is considering Iranian enticements to return to its embrace, according to recent Israeli intelligence assessments. In Gaza, where Hamas rose to power in 2007 through a violent coup against Fatah, Iran already has one very loyal proxy: Islamic Jihad. After Hamas, Islamic Jihad is the second largest terrorist entity in Gaza.

Michael Singh: The Case for Zero Enrichment in Iran—In the November 24 first-step nuclear accord, the P5+1 all but concedes that Iran will be permitted to enrich uranium in perpetuity. U.S. negotiators now characterize their previous position that Iran should halt enrichment as “maximalist.” Yet this shift away from a zero-enrichment negotiating position, which represents a significant diplomatic victory for Iran, is misguided and unnecessary. Iran has no practical need for uranium enrichment, unless its actual desire is to build or preserve the option to build a nuclear weapon. Allowing Iran to enrich complicates the task of verifying that Iran is not diverting ostensibly safeguarded material to a parallel, covert nuclear weapons program.

Lt. Col. (ret.) Michael Segall: Iran’s Fortunes Rising in a Middle East Vacuum—On March 12, 2014, Israel was hit by massive rocket fire from Gaza by Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). PIJ is completely dependent on Iran for its funding and equipment, and some of its operatives have also undergone training in Iran for the manufacture of rockets and explosives and for guerrilla warfare. There have also been recurring attacks on IDF border forces in Israel’s north as well – including along the Syrian border – where Hizbullah’s ties with Iran are well-known. All of these attacks on Israel come in the wake of the green light given by Iran against the backdrop of changing power equations in the broader Middle East. Iran has been leading an “axis of evil” as it devises and implements an ambitious plan to increase its influence across the Middle East and mold it in line with its revolutionary Islamic ideology. Central to that plan is ejecting the United States and the West from the region, along with what remains of their influence.

Ron Ben-Yishai: Nasrallah Seeks Revenge without Fingerprints—The explosive device which wounded four IDF soldiers Tuesday has Hizbullah’s fingerprints all over it. The radical Shiite terror group was seeking to avenge an attack on a weapons convoy two weeks ago which was carrying advanced rockets from Syria to Lebanon, which it attributes to Israel. More than a year ago, Hizbullah set up a field base in the northern side of the Syrian Golan Heights, to aid forces fighting for Syrian President Bashar Assad and launch attacks against Israel.

Sharif Nashashibi: Hizbullah’s Advances in Syria Expose Its Frailties in Lebanon—The fall of Yabroud on Sunday to Hizbullah and Syrian regime forces is a significant setback for rebel fighters. The Syrian city, which had been under opposition control for much of the revolution, was their last stronghold near the Lebanese border and its fall leaves nearby rebel-held towns and suburbs of Damascus, the capital, more vulnerable to attacks that are reportedly imminent. It also enables President Assad to secure the land route linking his coastal stronghold with Damascus. However, the description of this as “a continuation of the successes made by the Syrian army” is fanciful. This, and a string of previous battlefield gains, would not have been possible without the direct involvement of Hizbullah fighters. The fact is that the regime owes its survival to foreign intervention.

Benedetta Berti and Yoram Schweitzer: Hizbollah’s Political and Security Situation: Existing and Emerging Challenges— In the past three weeks there have been at least four different cross-border rocket and roadside bomb attacks occurring in both the Golan Heights and the Mount Dov area, the most serious of which occurred yesterday, March 18, 2014. In all cases Hizbollah has appeared as a possible perpetrator, thereby attempting to polish its reputation as leader of the national resistance and “defender of Lebanon” against Israeli aggression, while also trying to avoid a full military escalation occurring within Lebanon. By targeting Israel through the Golan, Hizbollah can signal to Israel that the group is capable of stirring up trouble at Israel’s borders through Syria without extending the battlefield into Lebanon. In this context it is important for Israel to keep in mind its interest in not becoming dragged into the civil war in Syria or mired in the domestic instability in Lebanon. As such Israel would do well to try to prevent escalation and keep any military response limited and focused.

Yoav Zitun: High Alert on Syrian Border: “Next Attack Is Only a Matter of Time”—Israeli army officials estimate that another attempt to harm IDF forces in the vicinity of the Syrian border will be carried out and the level of alert in the region will remain high. The region in which the attack occurred is under Syrian army control. Al-Arabiya reported that the aim of the attack was to kidnap an Israeli soldier. The explosive device used Tuesday contained thousands of fragments. In order to rule out a kidnapping attempt, IDF cannon immediately fired heavily to mask the area. Within minutes, tanks shelled towards Syrian outposts, and Tamuz missiles hit more distant positions.

John Ericson: This Is Why Dark Chocolate Has So Many Health Benefits— New research from Louisiana State University offers the first-ever glimpse of the mechanism by which dark chocolate benefits cardiovascular health, a complex biological process that has traditionally been shrouded in mystery. Maria Moore, an undergraduate student at Louisiana State and co-author of the study, said in a press release that the process requires a distinction between “good” and “bad” gut bacteria. “The good microbes, such as Bifidobacterium and lactic acid bacteria, feast on chocolate,” she explained. “When you eat dark chocolate, they grow and ferment it, producing compounds that are anti-inflammatory.”

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Zechariah 14: 9-11

And Yahweh will be king over all the earth; in that day Yahweh will be the only one, and His name the only one. All the land will be changed into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem; but Jerusalem will rise and remain on its site from Benjamin’s Gate as far as the place of the First Gate to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s wine presses. People will live in it, and there will no longer be a curse, for Jerusalem will dwell in security.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
