MK Ofir Akunis: The true obstacle for peace is the Palestinians themselves:

This is not about one specific piece of paper or another. It is also not that important whether a framework agreement is crafted, or a just a frame to an agreement. The title is not what matters, and neither is the debate on whether or not such a deal should or should not be accepted. One thing, however, is becoming clear: The true obstacle for peace is the Palestinians themselves.

The Palestinians’ insistent refusal to recognize Israel as the Jewish people’s rightful homeland exposes the most sensitive nerve in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This is not a territorial dispute, but rather one that focuses on the very essence and existence of the State of Israel.

When Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas repeatedly says, “Palestine could never recognize Israel as a Jewish state,” he reveals the most basic truth about the very nature of the conflict. In a way, we should welcome his honesty.

Yoram Ettinger—Kerry, it’s not the demography!: Is U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry correct when exhorting “the demographic time bomb” to scare Israel into a retreat from geography (Judea and Samaria), in order to, supposedly, secure demography? According to Kerry, “There is an existential threat to Israel. … I am referring to the demographic dynamic that makes it impossible for Israel to preserve its future as a democratic, Jewish state without resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a two-state solution.”

Frank Dimant—Defensible Borders Are Essential for Israel: Defensible borders for Israel are essential to maintaining a lasting peace for both Israelis and Palestinians. According to the plan of former Israeli military commander and foreign minister Yigal Allon, Israel was to retain 700 square miles of mostly arid and unpopulated territory in the Jordan Valley and Judean Desert. An updated Allon Plan became the basis of an Israeli national consensus regarding the territorial contours of a permanent status solution. UN Security Council Resolution 242 authorizes Israel to remain in possession of all the land until it has “secure and recognized boundaries.”

Shlomo Brom—The Escalation in Gaza: The past week has seen significant escalation from the Gaza area, with the launching of rockets from the Gaza Strip and Israeli responses to these launchings. There is concern that the dynamic of escalation will inevitably lead to a decision by Israel to initiate another large scale operation in the Gaza Strip along the lines of Operation Pillar of Defense and perhaps even Operation Cast Lead. Since it is likely that the current escalation is not due to a deliberate policy by Hamas, rather the result of its loss of control in a situation in which a border incident motivates a response by a Palestinian group, leading to an Israeli response, and so forth, Israel’s main objective is to prevent escalation into a full scale conflict that neither side wants, without harming the ability to deter Hamas and other players in the Gaza Strip.

Caroline Glick— Canada takes its place at the table: During a press conference with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, an Israeli reporter asked visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, “Is Canada paying a price for being so supportive of Israel? Is it possible to support Israel and still have ties to the Arab world?” This question goes to the heart of what is generally perceived as Israel’s greatest weakness. The Arab boycott of Israel and of companies doing business with Israel has served as one of the most potent weapons in the anti-Israel arsenal for over a generation. Indeed, since the OPEC oil embargo in 1974, it has been the Arabs’ single most powerful weapon in their unceasing campaign for the destruction of the Jewish state. It was Arab economic bullying that forced African nations to cut their ties with the Jewish state.

The Commentator: Palestinian leadership threatens to turn Tel Aviv into “ball of fire” amid peace talks— According to news just released by watchdog group, Palestinian Media Watch, (PMW) the Palestinian leadership has published a threat to bomb Tel Aviv. The message said the Israeli city would be turned into a “ball of fire.” The threats were published yesterday on the Facebook page of Fatah, the leading faction within the PLO, and which is headed by Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian leader. “We swear to you that we will turn the beloved [Gaza] Strip into a graveyard for your soldiers, and we will turn Tel Aviv into a ball of fire,” the message said.

Lee S. Bender and Jerome R. Verlin: How to Fight Back When the Media Blames ‎Israel for Destroying Peace Talks— As the indefatigable John Kerry plods on, ignoring the huge unbridgeable gulf between the Israeli and Palestinians’ peace terms positions, Israel’s advocates must make clear to Western publics how incompatible the Arab side’s demands are with the survival of the Jewish state.

Col. (ret.) Dr. Jacques Neriah: Foreign Jihadists Fighting in Syria: An Overview of the Danger—During the initial stages of the rebellion against Assad, the American, British, French, and Turkish intelligence services all thought that the Assad regime would not last long. Thus, they deeply misunderstood the power structure in Syria. In the beginning of the rebellion in 2011, the Free Syrian Army and other small militias were the spearhead of the armed opposition to the Assad regime. At that time, jihadist fighters were still a marginal phenomenon. During the last year, however, jihadist fighters have become omnipresent on the battlefield at the expense of the FSA. The foreign volunteers stay for some time in Syria, long enough to be trained in weapons, explosives, and guerilla warfare, then return to their countries where they recruit new fighters for the battle in Syria. The exceptions are mercenaries from the Balkans or Chechnya, who fight for money and stay in Syria for as long as they are being paid. Western intelligence services now warn of the threat of jihad-inspired terrorism in Europe by volunteers who received weapons and explosives training in Syria.

Benedetta Berti: Between Paralysis and Fatigue: The “Geneva 2” Negotiations on the Syrian Civil War— On January 22, 2014 representatives of the international community once again reconvened in Switzerland in an attempt to broker a negotiated agreement to end the bloody Syrian civil war. Since the last round of international talks in June 2012 (“Geneva 1”), the situation in Syria has deteriorated drastically. While the humanitarian situation has gotten worse, none of the warring parties is substantially closer today to a military victory than at the time of the Geneva 1 talks: on the contrary, despite a number of tactical victories by the regime, the painful stalemate continues and the conflict has become even more fragmented, with conflicts underway between the regime and the opposition, as well as within different segments of the anti-Assad camp. Against this discouraging outlook, the article examines what could be the best outcome of the Geneva 2 talks.

Michael Doran and Michael O’Hanlon: Why Syria Peace Talks Will Fail— This week, elements of the Syrian opposition are scheduled to begin negotiations in Geneva with representatives of President Bashar Assad. The goal of the talks is an end to a three-year civil war that has taken more than 130,000 lives, displaced 7 million Syrians, and turned the country not only into the epicenter of the Middle East’s Sunni-Shia war but also the hornet’s nest from which al-Qaeda-linked extremists destabilize Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan. Absent a miracle, the talks will fail. The goal of each side is the complete defeat of the other. But neither has the means to accomplish such objectives, or even understand this profound disconnect. Complicating things further, the Syrian opposition is as fractured as ever, with considerable infighting, and the rise of al-Qaeda affiliates within its ranks makes it harder to work with than before.

Jim Michaels—Plans are on for quick reaction force in Middle East: The Marine Corps is developing plans to establish a contingency force that will be based in the Middle East and be capable of responding to crises throughout the troubled region. The force is being planned as the United States reduces the size of its force in Afghanistan and has withdrawn combat forces from Iraq, shrinking its presence in a region plagued by violence and turmoil. Planning for the force reflects an overall shift in strategy as the Pentagon winds up two large land wars and develops a smaller military designed for limited contingencies. “The U.S. presence in the Persian Gulf is shifting from land to sea,” said Loren Thompson, an analyst at the Lexington Institute. “That means greater reliance on the Marines for carrying out any missions on shore.”

4--Scripture of the Day Yahweh

Zephaniah 3: 5-7

Yahweh is righteous within her; He will do no injustice. Every morning He brings His justice to light; He does not fail. But the unjust knows no shame. “I have cut off nations; their corner towers are in ruins. I have made their streets desolate, with no one passing by; their cities are laid waste, without a man, without an inhabitant. I said, ‘Surely you will revere Me, accept instruction.’ So her dwelling will not be cut off according to all that I have appointed concerning her. But they were eager to corrupt all their deeds.”

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
