Isi Leibler—No illusions over the Obama administration:

Israel is heading for what could be its most severe confrontation with the United States, despite reassuring words from the Obama administration to the contrary.

President Barack Obama’s policies have led to a U.S. retreat at all levels in the global arena, particularly in the Middle East, where his disastrous policy of “engaging” with rogue states coincided with alienating, even abandoning, traditional U.S. allies like Egypt and Saudi Arabia. His administration has also totally failed to mitigate the rampant bloodshed, with hundreds of civilians being killed daily in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere in the Arab world.

However, despite all evidence to the contrary, the administration persists in its mantra that the principal problem in the Middle East is the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and displays a determination to impose a settlement on Israelis and Palestinians. It does so — even setting aside the problem of Hamas — despite the fact that the undemocratic Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, whose term expired years ago, is neither willing nor able to make any meaningful concessions to Israel.

13--Perspectives 2

#####

Aaron David Miller: Why the U.S. and Israel Are Split over the Iran Deal—Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s fierce reaction to the effort to reach an interim agreement with Iran reflects the realities of a small power with much less room to maneuver on a critical security issue than a great one. It reveals the sensitivities of an Israeli leader who’s far more suspicious of Iranian motives and far more worried about the consequences of a bad deal for Israel than a U.S. president who’s concerned more about what happens if there’s no deal and Israel or the U.S. slides toward military confrontation with the mullahs who rule Iran.

Jennifer Rubin: On Iran, Congress should stand with France—The near-disaster at Geneva represents a foreign policy challenge for both parties. Republicans and Democrats who understand the gravity of the president’s dangerous gambit to try to trade sanctions for Iranian promises, against the wishes of allies, have a unique opportunity to course correct American policy. Usually the executive reigns supreme in matters of foreign policy, especially when it comes to diplomatic negotiations. But several factors have shattered the president’s preeminence. First, Congress has already played a major role as instigator of sanctions. Second, in the Syria fiasco and now with Geneva, the administration has revealed itself to be irresolute if not downright dishonest about its “redlines” and hence unworthy of the public’s blind trust. Third, the president is a greatly diminished figure, already tanking in the polls and taking positions that threaten the Democrats’ majority in the Senate.

Eli Hazan: The Hollande Line— Last August, French aircraft set off toward Syria to bomb the central missile batteries manned by the Syrian unit that oversaw chemical weapons. But U.S. President Barack Obama vetoed the attack, and today, Syrian President Bashar Assad continues to slaughter his countrymen. It’s true, during the current nuclear talks the U.S. has demonstrated a willingness to accept far-reaching concessions that could jeopardize global security, but France is not standing idly by. Paris has boldly tried to prevent a situation where the Iranians seize Western opinion while pressing on unencumbered toward a nuclear bomb. Next week, French President Francois Hollande will visit Israel and deliver a speech at the Knesset, something Obama refused to do.

Washington Post Editorial: A Better Iran Deal Needed—The latest pause in the talks with Iran on its nuclear program was fortunate. The Obama administration could profitably spend the time before the next round of talks ensuring that whatever terms it puts forward for limiting Iranian nuclear capacity have broad support in Washington and among U.S. allies.     Israel and some congressional critics say any easing of sanctions should only follow decisive moves by Iran to give up its capacity to enrich uranium or produce plutonium, the key elements in nuclear bombs. They warn that any relaxation of pressure could lead to an unintended crumbling of the sanctions regime.

Ben Cohen: The Obama Administration is Spineless in the Middle East— Here, in a nutshell, are the principles driving the Obama Administration’s Middle East policy. Screw the Syrians. Don’t upset the Iranians. And stop those damn Israelis from wrecking Israeli-Palestinian conflict negotiations. We are coming to the end of year marked by shameful climb-downs in the face of our enemies and utterly unreasonable demands made of our allies. In Syria, Obama temporarily toyed with the idea of launching air strikes against the regime of Bashar al-Assad, before being seduced by a Russian proposal to have that same regime dismantle its own weapons of mass destruction. There were lots of good reasons to attack Assad, for example his military reliance on the Iranian regime and the terrorists of Hezbollah, as well as the moral imperative of combating the sheer evil of chemical weapons, but Obama, buoyed by isolationists on right and left, placed his faith in Vladimir Putin instead.

Prof. Ron Breiman: Between Arak and a hard place— The discord between the United States and Israel over the Iranian nuclear program is grabbing headlines, and the gap between how these two countries understand the reality of the situation needs to be discussed. The Americans in general and the Obama administration in particular are making mistake after mistake in their analysis of the developments in the Middle East. Because of this they are perhaps surprised at the results of their words and actions, while their allies, who know the region and are more in tune, are proved right.

Ruthie Blum: Behind the multi-billion-dollar mullah— Move over, Bill Gates. There’s somebody out there stealing your title as the richest man in the world. Unlike you, however, he has been keeping his fortune close to his chest. Or so he thought, until it was revealed by Reuters on Monday. Yes, your net worth of $76.2 billion pales in comparison to the wealth of your newly discovered competitor, whose assets are estimated at in excess of $95 billion. And this guy didn’t even have to earn it by the sweat of his brow. All he had to do was pray to Allah. Oh, and rob thousands upon thousands of people of their property.

Alan Baker: Amb. Alan Baker letter to Secretary John Kerry— Dear Secretary Kerry, After listening to you declare repeatedly over the past weeks that “Israel’s settlements are illegitimate”, I respectfully wish to state, unequivocally, that you are mistaken and ill advised, both in law and in fact.  Pursuant to the “Oslo Accords”, and specifically the Israel-Palestinian Interim Agreement (1995), the “issue of settlements” is one of [the] subjects to be negotiated in the permanent status negotiations. President Bill Clinton on behalf of the US, is signatory as witness to that agreement, together with the leaders of the EU, Russia, Egypt, Jordan and Norway.  Your statements serve to not only to prejudge this negotiating issue, but also to undermine the integrity of that agreement, as well as the very negotiations that you so enthusiastically advocate.

Dr. Ronen Yitzhak: Moscow on the Nile— “We cannot depend on the Americans anymore and are going to work with Russia soon,” Egyptian Defense Minister Col. Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi announced after a last minute visit from U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in Cairo over the weekend. El-Sissi’s statements underscore his disappointment in the U.S.’s Egypt policy in the last few years. The souring relations between the U.S. and Egypt seemed to only get worse, especially after the ousting of President Mohamed Morsi in July. Following the violent repression of Muslim Brotherhood supporters in the Egyptian streets, which left hundreds dead, the U.S. administration announced in October that it was freezing military aid to Egypt worth $260 million and putting arms deliveries to Egypt, including military jets, helicopters, tanks and artillery, on hold.

Rich Lowry: Why won’t Jimmy Kimmel apologize some more?— Jimmy Kimmel used to be a professional comedian. His new job is apologizing. A few weeks ago, the host of ABC’s late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live aired a bit where a six-year-old boy recommends killing everyone in China. Kimmel and the network have been apologizing ever since. Over the weekend, protesters besieged ABC studios around the country. They want Kimmel fired or, failing that, more apologies.

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
