Robert Spencer—No to War in Syria:

A Senate panel has voted to authorize Barack Obama to use military force in Syria. This is a disaster in the making.

Just as in Afghanistan, Obama has no goal, no plan for victory. He said that the military strikes in Syria would not be directed toward removing Bashar Assad, but then he said that it would be a good thing to remove Assad from power. This was just one of many indications of how ill-conceived and misbegotten Obama’s Syria plan really is.

Obama said that Assad used chemical weapons, but still has not produced compelling enough evidence to convince our closest allies, the British. What he has produced is a series of YouTube videos of dubious provenance, establishing nothing conclusive.

And as is increasingly the case in Afghanistan also, as Hamid Karzai continues to show his true colors, Obama doesn’t even have any real allies inside Syria, either. Even the New York Times has admitted that there is no significant secular fighting force within Syria. The major rebel groups are all allied with al-Qaeda. John Kerry insists they’re “secular” and John McCain assures us they’re “moderates.” None of these groups, however, have shown any sign of being either.

13--Perspectives 2

Raymond Ibrahim: Al-Qaeda Vows to Slaughter Christians After U.S. ‘Liberates’ Syria— While U.S. leaders continue pushing for war against the Syrian government, today “Al-Qaeda-linked rebels,” reports AP, “launched an assault on a regime-held Christian mountain village in the densely populated west of Syria and new clashes erupted near the capital, Damascus, on Wednesday…  In the attack on the village of Maaloula, rebels commandeered a mountaintop hotel and nearby caves and shelled the community below, said a nun, speaking by phone from a convent in the village. She spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.”

Paul Greenberg: Familiar territory: Haven’t we been here before?—Question: Just what is this president’s goal in ravaged Syria — only a symbolic strike from a distance, a brief pause before still more millions in Syria are left to the tender mercies of Bashar al-Assad and his Iranian sponsors? For he can count on the unstinting support of the usual terrorist groups and his faithful enablers in Moscow and Beijing.

Robert J. Samuelson: The ‘war weary’ myth— The truth is that for most Americans the constant combat has imposed no burdens, required no sacrifices and involved no disruptions. True, the money spent has been substantial. From 2001 to 2012, reckons the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan along with related operations cost $1.4 trillion. Although that’s a lot even by Washington standards, it pales next to all federal spending and the economy’s total production. From 2001 to 2012, federal spending totaled $33.3 trillion; the wars were 4 percent of that. Over the same period, the American economy produced $163 trillion of goods and services. War spending equaled nine-tenths of 1 percent of that. As important, no special tax was ever imposed to pay war costs. They were simply added to budget deficits, so that few, if any, Americans suffered a loss of income. It’s doubtful that much other government spending was crowded out by the wars.

Gemunder Center Iran Task Force: Strategy to Prevent a Nuclear Iran—Three consecutive presidential administrations, of both parties, have declared a nuclear Iran unacceptable. Shortly after his election in 2008, President Barack Obama pledged, like his predecessors, to “use all elements of American power” to thwart Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Since then he has made clear, repeatedly, that he is determined to “prevent, not contain,” a nuclear Iran and that, in these matters, he “does not bluff.” Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel spelled out the Administration’s position even more clearly during a visit to Israel this spring: “all military options, and every option, must remain on the table in dealing with Iran.”

Cliff Kincaid: The Planned Destruction of Christians in Syria— The New York Times story, “President Gains McCain’s Backing on Syria Attack,” is predictable, considering that Obama had invited Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) to the White House for the specific purpose of supporting his proposed military strike on Syria. Obama has also asked the same two senators to travel to Egypt to undermine the military leaders who overthrew the Muslim Brotherhood government there.

Barry Rubin: Turning Point: Obama and Israel, The Next Three Years— We have just entered a new era with the Middle East and its relation to the world. Not every day can you proclaim such a shift in world history; today you can. This is not a joke — definitely not — and as you will see, it is not an exaggeration. For the last seven weeks I have been in the United States, mostly in Washington, D.C.; I have spoken with and listened to many people. As a result, I am in a position to describe to you with a high degree of confidence what U.S. policy regarding the Middle East will be for the remainder of Obama’s term, and perhaps for far into the future. In short, the administration has crossed a line and is now backing the “bad guys.”

Daniel Greenfield: Obama slobbers over Muslim Brotherhood—“My administration is proud to be your partner”, Obama tells Muslim Brotherhood pro-Hamas group.

John Lichfield: Syria crisis: Deep conflicts surface as French debate military strike— A stormy debate in the national assembly tonight laid bare deep conflicts in French political opinion on President François Hollande’s plans to join the US in punitive air strikes on Syria.

Iran Wire: Syria Strike’s First Target Could Be Diplomacy With Iran— While Washington’s ultimate objective with strikes on Syria remains unclear, it’s evident that whatever happens will likely imperil negotiations with Iran’s newly-elected moderate government.

Stephen Schwartz: Radical Coup in Kosovo Muslim Leadership— Challenged by a respected and moderate Islamic scholar, Dr. Xhabir Hamiti, in an election for the top position in the Islamic Community of Kosovo, the Balkan republic’s radical chief cleric Naim Ternava has “amended” the Community constitution, which limited occupancy of the post to two five-year terms. Ternava won his first vote in 2003 and has come to the end of his second term, the maximum period in office. But on August 29, the Assembly of the Islamic Community of Kosovo (the BIK) revised its regulations to allow Ternava to run for a third term.

4--Scripture of the Day USE THIS ONE

The scripture below is from the New American Standard Bible, and the hyperlinks associated with each word are from Strong’s Concordance for the New American Standard Bible.

Joel 2: 11-17

Yahweh utters His voice before His army; surely His camp is very great, for strong is he who carries out His word. The day of Yahweh is indeed great and very awesome, and who can endure it? “Yet even now,” declares Yahweh, “return to Me with all your heart, and with fasting, weeping and mourning; and rend your heart and not your garments.” Now return to Yahweh your God, for He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness and relenting of evil. Who knows whether He will [not] turn and relent and leave a blessing behind Him, [even] a grain offering and a drink offering for Yahweh your God? Blow a trumpet in Zion, consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly, gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children and the nursing infants. Let the bridegroom come out of his room and the bride out of her [bridal] chamber. Let the priests, Yahweh’s ministers, weep between the porch and the altar, snd let them say, “Spare Your people, O Yahweh, and do not make Your inheritance a reproach, a byword among the nations. Why should they among the peoples say, “Where is their God?'”

14--Blessings from Revelation 2

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
