Mark Langfan—US and EU: Bad Cop, Worse Cop:

Some Israeli ministers are in shock at the European Union (EU) diktat attempting to impose the 1949 ceasefire line, also known as the  pre-1967 lines, as the proposed Israeli/Palestinian Authority border. The ministers, including Prime Minister Netanyau, protest that the EU is “undermining” the Kerry Mission.

I posit that these complaining ministers are deluded; I believe Obama co-planned the EU diktat.  The EU diktat and the Kerry mission are the right and left hand of Obama and the EU’s  strategy announced by Obama on 19 May 2011: “The borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps, so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states. The Palestinian people must have the right to govern themselves, and reach their potential in a sovereign and contiguous state.”

The Israelis are too naive to understand that they have been double-crossed by “no better friend than” President Obama.

Ben Lynfield: Are Israeli-Palestinian Talks Based on 1967 Lines?—Israelis and Palestinians are sparring over the central question of whether the talks are based on Israel’s 1967 lines or not. Abdullah Abdullah, deputy commissioner for international relations of Abbas’ Fatah movement, insists that the U.S. invitation to the talks spells out clearly that the negotiations are to be based upon the line between Israel and the West Bank that existed before the 1967 war. But a senior Israeli official said, ”We did not agree to that. Israel rejected the Palestinian demand for this as a precondition for talks.”

Avi Issacharoff: Chances for a Permanent Israeli-Palestinian Peace Deal—Both the Israeli and the Palestinian public are treating this round of peace talks with a combination of disdain and apathy. It appears that both sides were dragged by Kerry to Washington against their will. Simply put, Netanyahu believes Abbas is unable to make peace. Both leaders are sending out pessimistic vibes, giving those around them the feeling that nothing much will come of all this.

Herb Keinon: “Palestine” without Jews—Mahmoud Abbas told Egyptian journalists in Cairo this week that the state he wants Israel to give him must be judenrein: “In a final resolution, we would not see the presence of a single Israeli – civilian or soldier – on our lands.” Abbas’ words do not exactly enhance a mood of reconciliation. If the Israeli public is to back a deal, it will need some sense of goodwill from the other side.

Shimon Shapira and Michael Segall: Iran Responds to Europe’s Blacklisting of Hizbullah—The EU decision to include Hizbullah’s military wing on its blacklist of terror groups ignores the basic fact that Hizbullah is a unitary, hierarchical organization. As Hizbullah Deputy Secretary-General Naim Qassem said in October 2012: “We don’t have a military wing and a political one.”

Zvi Mazel: Hezbollah: If it quacks like a duck…— After 30 years of hesitation, the European Union timidly admitted that Hezbollah’s armed wing was a terror organization. Catherine Ashton, who is in charge of EU foreign policy, hastened to say that this measure would in no way impact the ongoing dialogue between the EU and the organization. Or in other words for the EU, Hezbollah is a political party which may have strayed from the straight and narrow by setting up an “armed wing,” but can be made to see the error of its ways through “moderate pressure.”

Stephan Miller: Negotiating Lessons from the New U.S. Peace Coordinator—Martin Indyk, named Monday as U.S. Special Envoy for Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations, in 2009 published an account of his personal experiences as a U.S. diplomat at the heart of the Middle East peace process, entitledInnocent Abroad. Here are some of his conclusions: “Most Israelis view the unilateral withdrawals from Lebanon and Gaza as mistakes because violent attacks continued.”

Dr. Reuven Berko: The unfolding failure— Most Palestinians are of the mind that Abbas barely represents himself, and any agreement he signs will be broken and the conflict will resume.

Edward Alexander: A Clue to Obama’s Post-POTUS Career Move?— Two prominent articles in the Wall Street Journal of 20-21 July beg to be connected. One is Sohrab Ahmari’s shrewd and unsettling interview with ex-senator Jon Kyl about the potential threat to American sovereignty posed by the transnational legal movement modeled on the European Union and its wonderful “progressive” and humanitarian values. These values are articulated in Brussels without regard to representative national legislatures – in Ireland or Italy or France.

Pesach Benson: Photojournalist Stages News for Profit and Ideology— Fadi Arouri is one of Ramallah’s biggest opponents of normalizing Israeli-Palestinian ties. He’s also a photographer who isn’t interested in separating his professional journalism and political activism. And that raises questions about his association with the Reuters wire service and China’s Xinhua News Agency. HonestReporting has learned Reuters fired Arouri, apparently over his extra-curricular activities, but the wire service continues to use his work on a free lance basis.

Daniel Pipes: What to Want in Egypt—In the aftermath of the coup d’état in Egypt, a consensus has emerged, to cite an anonymous Obama administration official, that “trying to break the neck of the [Muslim] Brotherhood is not going to be good for Egypt or for the region.” The thinking behind this view is that (1) it’s better to have Islamists in the political process than violently rebelling and (2) participating in civil society has the potential to tame Islamists, making them see the benefits of democracy and turning them into just another interest group. May I vociferously disagree?

4--Scripture of the Day

Hosea 10: 1-2

Israel is a luxuriant vine; he produces fruit for himself. The more his fruit, the more altars he made; the richer his land, the better he made the sacred pillars. Their heart is faithless; now they must bear their guilt. Yahweh will break down their altars and destroy their sacred pillars.

14--Blessings from Revelation

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
