Is the Arab-Israeli conflict really about economics? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry recently claimed “People in Israel aren’t waking up every day and wondering if tomorrow there will be peace because there is a sense of security and a sense of accomplishment and of prosperity.”
This was echoed by New York Times reporter Ethan Bronner, who recently took Israelis to task for their economic success; they have “moved on” from the conflict with the Palestinians which still looms like an “iceberg” in front of their “Titanic.”
Presumably the flip side to Israeli prosperity is Palestinian poverty. But this is a harder claim to make. After all, Palestinians are by far the world’s largest per capita recipients of international foreign aid, having received more than $12 billion over the past 15 years. Through UNRWA the international community, meaning mostly the U.S. and the European Union, also provides another $500 million a year to support Palestinian health, education and welfare services.

Boaz Bismuth: Morsi’s worst nightmare— In his worst nightmares Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi never imagined celebrating the one-year anniversary of his swearing-in ceremony hidden away in the presidential guard’s headquarters. Millions of enraged Egyptians, preparing to take to the streets and squares Sunday to demand his departure, are threatening his life. The protest signs raised in Tahrir Square in 2011 are now reappearing. The slogans are the same, but this time Morsi has replaced Mubarak as the focus of the vitriol. The Israeli flag has also been brought back to the streets by the liberal youth, again in the role of the enemy. Egypt is at the boiling point.
Reuters: Analysis: Egypt heads for a ‘dark tunnel’ – again—Egypt is heading for a “dark tunnel”, says the head of its armed forces. How he and his generals respond to a political showdown in the streets may determine whether its new democracy survives to see the light. The warning at the start of the week from General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was presented as a wake-up call to the rival factions, President Mohamed Morsi and his Islamist allies on one side, a disparate coalition of liberals and a mass of Egyptians simply frustrated by economic stagnation on the other.

The slow, comfortable contacts between rounds bear no significance — at the end of the day, there is always a lot of work to be done. Both sides feel compelled to try to gain just another tiny advantage. In an Agence France Presse YouTube video, the commander of the children’s camp says, “We have full confidence that they [the children] will be able to carry weapons and open fire against the enemy because we have planted hatred of the enemy in their hearts.” Tens of thousands of young boys ages 6 to 16 will be indoctrinated into this mindset this summer.
Sigal Arbitman: There’s No Stopping This Song—When musicians come under attack by boycott groups and get cold feet about performing in Israel, Adam Shay, 37, a researcher at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, is there to encourage them. If an artist gets 600 emails saying that he’s going to be killed if he performs in Israel, “he can do nothing but be frightened. Artists complain of massive attacks, to the point where their websites crash, before they perform in Israel.”

Arabs claim that Jewish settlements “change the status” of the Territories and represent a distortion of the Oslo Accords. The phrase applies to acts that change the political status of the disputed territory – such as outright Israeli annexation, or a Palestinian declaration of statehood.

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.
