Yahweh is Mysterious, but Satan is a Liar

Yahweh works in mysterious ways.  Probably the most mysterious thing that Yahweh ever did was to come to earth in the form of a Man to save us and deliver us from our sins.  It was so improbable that most of the religious leaders in Israel couldn’t or wouldn’t accept Him.  After all, He was a poor man—the Son of a carpenter.  They had expected and wanted a valiant warrior, an upper-class Israelite, to emerge and do that job.  Unfortunately, they didn’t understand Yahweh or His word.  They accused Him of blasphemy, tried Him in Caiaphas’ court, took Him to Pontius Pilate the Roman Governor of Judea, and demanded His crucifixion.

Acts chapter 10 tells about another mysterious event that took place shortly after the crucifixion.  It has been misunderstood by Christians throughout the world for millennia, and to this day, it is used to excuse rebellion against Yahweh’s commands:

Now there was a man at Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian cohort, a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, and gave many alms to the Jewish people and prayed to God continually. About the ninth hour of the day he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God who had just come in and said to him, “Cornelius!” And fixing his gaze on him and being much alarmed, he said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and alms have ascended as a memorial before God. “Now dispatch some men to Joppa [Joppa is Jaffa or Yafo in modern-day Israel.  It’s south of Tel Aviv] and send for a man named Simon, who is also called Peter; he is staying with a tanner named Simon, whose house is by the sea.” When the angel who was speaking to him had left, he summoned two of his servants and a devout soldier of those who were his personal attendants, and after he had explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

On the next day, as they were on their way and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray. But he became hungry and was desiring to eat; but while they were making preparations, he fell into a trance; and he saw the sky opened up, and an object like a great sheet coming down, lowered by four corners to the ground, and there were in it all kinds of four-footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the air. A voice came to him, “Get up, Peter, kill and eat!” But Peter said, “By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy and unclean.” Again a voice came to him a second time, “What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy.” This happened three times, and immediately the object was taken up into the sky.

Now while Peter was greatly perplexed in mind as to what the vision which he had seen might be, behold, the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having asked directions for Simon’s house, appeared at the gate; and calling out, they were asking whether Simon, who was also called Peter, was staying there. While Peter was reflecting on the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, three men are looking for you. But get up, go downstairs and accompany them without misgivings, for I have sent them Myself.” Peter went down to the men and said, “Behold, I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for which you have come?” They said, “Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man well spoken of by the entire nation of the Jews, was divinely directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and hear a message from you.” So he invited them in and gave them lodging.

And on the next day he got up and went away with them, and some of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him. On the following day he entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them and had called together his relatives and close friends. When Peter entered, Cornelius met him, and fell at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter raised him up, saying, “Stand up; I too am just a man.” As he talked with him, he entered and found many people assembled. And he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with a foreigner or to visit him; and yet God has shown me that I should not call any man unholy or unclean. That is why I came without even raising any objection when I was sent for. So I ask for what reason you have sent for me.”

Cornelius said, “Four days ago to this hour, I was praying in my house during the ninth hour; and behold, a man stood before me in shining garments, and he said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God. Therefore send to Joppa and invite Simon, who is also called Peter, to come to you; he is staying at the house of Simon the tanner by the sea.’ So I sent for you immediately, and you have been kind enough to come. Now then, we are all here present before God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord.”

Opening his mouth, Peter said: “I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome to Him. The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all)— you yourselves know the thing which took place throughout all Judea, starting from Galilee, after the baptism which John proclaimed. You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. We are witnesses of all the things He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They also put Him to death by hanging Him on a cross. God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He become visible, not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen beforehand by God, that is, to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead. Of Him all the prophets bear witness that through His name [Yahweh] everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins.”

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the message. All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered, “Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?” And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ [Yahweh]. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days. (Acts 10: 1-48)

It’s obvious that the central message in Acts chapter 10 is that Yahweh came to save everyone who calls on His Name—Jews and Gentiles alike.  No one understood that message better than Peter.  Reread his statements that are in bold italics:

“You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with a foreigner or to visit him; and yet God has shown me that I should not call any man unholy or unclean.”

“I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality, but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome to Him.”

“Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?”

Yahweh is mysterious, but Satan is a liar.  In John 8: 44, the Messiah called him the father of lies, and Satan has used Acts chapter 10 to convince Yahweh’s people that it is okay to eat pork and any other sort of unclear animal.  The only thing that even hints at that conclusion is the sheet that was lowered from heaven that included “all kinds of four-footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the air.”  Even so, that’s enough for most Christians who have to ignore Peter’s interpretation of his vision completely to justify their decision to consume unclean creatures.

If the purpose of Peter’s vision was to show that Yahweh had changed His dietary laws, you can rest assured that Peter would have understood it and that he would have made it clear to everyone including Cornelius’ relatives and close friends.  Instead, the only thing that Peter said about that mysterious event was that salvation was intended for everyone of any race or nationality—including the Romans who had by that time become the mortal enemies of the Israeli people.

Don’t be a victim of Satan’s lies.  Read Yahweh’s word and interpret it in light of what you know about Him.  He established His laws for our protection, and we ignore them at our peril.

Robert Spencer: Another Obama Assault on Free Speech—The Obama Administration’s latest assault on the freedom of speech is so audacious that it leaves me speechless – and that’s the idea. According to Politico, Bill Killian, the Obama-appointed U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee, “is reportedly vowing to use federal civil rights statutes to clamp down on offensive and inflammatory speech about Islam.” Said Killian: “We need to educate people about Muslims and their civil rights, and as long as we’re here, they’re going to be protected.”

Boaz Bismuth: A warning to Erdoğan— Has the fate of 600 trees in central Istanbul given birth to a Turkish Spring? Will Taksim Square become to the Turks what Tahrir Square was to the Egyptians? It is too early to tell and the chances are high that the answers to both questions will be no. But Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, drunk with power following electoral victories in 2002, 2007 and 2011, has been dealt a serious blow by the worst unrest since he took power.

Richard Baehr: Obama’s war on terror excludes Iran— For the first time in five years, the love embrace from the media that helped Barack Obama get nominated, then elected, then re-elected, has loosened a bit. In the face of the continuing investigations of misbehavior by the IRS, and the Justice Department and the actions (or inaction) by the State Department, CIA, White House and Defense Department during and after the attack in Benghazi, the White House has seemed to be off-stride in its messaging the last few weeks, demonstrating little skill at playing defense amidst the growing web of scandals. An administration experienced in being in attack mode against its political enemies, whether Mitt Romney, the Tea Party, House Republicans, or Fox News, has seen its second term agenda derailed.

Jacques Neriah: Iranian Shiite Terror Cell in Nigeria Followed a Familiar Pattern— This new crisis in Nigerian-Iranian relations comes barely less than three years after an Iranian weapons shipment was discovered in Lagos Apapa Port (on October 26, 2010) concealed in thirteen containers aboard a ship sailing from Bandar Abbas, in clear violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1929 (of June 2009) imposing additional sanctions on Iran. (This episode was followed by the discovery of $10 million worth of heroin hidden in engine parts shipped from Iran that was seized at Lagos Airport that same year.) When Nigerian authorities requested information from Tehran about the identity of the weapons cargo’s recipient, they were rebuffed. Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki was then sent to Nigeria to solve the problem. Mottaki met with Nigerian authorities and explained that there had been a mistake and that the weapons’ destination was actually Gambia. Meanwhile, new shipping documents were produced for the cargo, which listed the private address of Gambian President Jammeh as the destination.

Majid Rafizadeh: Obama’s ‘Wait and See’ Foreign Policy—One of the early policy gaffes that the Obama administration made, and which will ultimately have severe negative repercussions on the United States, was not commanding a strong leadership when protests erupted during Iran’s debated 2009 elections. It was during this time that the U.S. leaders had the potential to significantly alter the balance of power against the ruling clerics and Ayatollahs. A second, and similar, geopolitical, national and strategic mistake that the Obama administration is currently conducting is allowing Russia and the Islamic Republic of Iran to take the leadership position in regards to Syria. What the Obama administration is adopting is the policy of “Wait and See”; a strategy that supports taking the back seat rather than the steering wheel.

Fernande Van Tets: Political Reality TV in Ramallah—The political changes sweeping the Middle East are giving birth to a new genre: political reality TV. Palestinians haven’t had presidential elections since 2005, due to the conflict between Hamas and Fatah. But now broadcasters are offering wannabe politicians a viable path to a political career – on air, at least, with a program called “al-Rais” (“The President”). The contestants, all under 35, are grilled by a panel of judges and challenged to complete tasks meant to shed light on their ability to handle high office.

Daniel Pinner: Did the Nakba Begin in 1948 – or 1920?—May 15 saw demonstrations and ceremonies throughout the world to mark the 65th anniversary of the Nakba – the Disaster, the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Yet in The Arab Awakening: The Story of the Arab National Movement, George Antonius writes: “The year 1920 has an evil name in Arab annals: it is referred to as the Year of the Catastrophe,” when European colonial powers partitioned the Ottoman Empire into a series of separate states. That year saw the first armed risings in protest against the post-war settlement imposed by the Allies on the Arab countries.

Evelyn Gordon: Iran Has No Territorial Ambitions? Tell It to Lebanon and Syria—In a study recently published by the Rand Corporation, author Alireza Nader concludes that containing a nuclear Iran is feasible because Iran’s nukes wouldn’t threaten either America or its Middle Eastern allies. “Iran does not have territorial ambitions and does not seek to invade, conquer, or occupy other nations,” Nader asserted.

Aaron David Miller: Perils of Peace Conferences—Secretary of State John Kerry has two diplomatic tracks in the works: ending a civil war in Syria and promoting a peace between Israelis and Palestinians. With both, the parties involved don’t know whether they really want to start a political process, and they certainly don’t know how to conclude one. In Syria, you have 80,000 dead, which has increased the urgency of a political transition but hardened all parties’ willingness to bring one about.

Bruce Bawer: Muslim Days of Rage—Then, the other day, I read the closest thing I’ve yet seen to a textual counterpart to that picture. Mind you, I thought I’d already read the most foolish, self-deluding possible responses to the chaos in Stockholm. But then the website of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) ran a long article by respected (as they say) social psychologist Arnulf Kolstad. “If one wishes to understand a riot,” Kolstad began, “one should listen to the rioters.” And if we’d only listened to the Stockholm rioters, he continued, we’d perhaps have grasped “that the riots in Stockholm have a cause. And that they were perhaps even necessary.”

14--Blessings from Revelation

Blessings in the Book of Revelation is a book that you need to read, especially now.  There are blessings throughout the Scriptures but Revelation is the only book in the Bible actually containing a specific blessing for reading it. It’s repeated twice, once at the beginning and again at the end. This is the reason that I believe Revelation should be the first step toward studying biblical prophecy. Though not easy to do, Revelation can be broken down and understood by anyone, not just the academic elite. So, Revelation’s blessings are for everyone.  Click here to order the eBook.  Click here to order the paperback.
