And it will come about that after I have uprooted them, I will again have compassion on them; and I will bring them back, each one to his inheritance and each one to his land. Then if they will really learn the ways of My people, to swear by My name, ‘As Yahweh lives,’ even as they taught My people to swear by Baal, they will be built up in the midst of My people. But if they will not listen, then I will uproot that nation, uproot and destroy it,” declares Yahweh.

Abraham Lincoln is getting a lot of attention these days from politicians in Washington who want us to believe that they stand for the ideals he championed. If they only knew how wrong they are, they would be ashamed – that is if the concept of shame registers with them.

This is not about political party. It’s about a prosperous nation that got off course and through its elected officials created a monster. Roughly half of the working people in this nation pay no federal income taxes, and roughly half of the people in this nation get back more from the federal government than they pay in. We have created a freeloader society, and the percentage of those among us who are gaming the system is rising rapidly. The worst offenders are our elected officials.

Is this what Abraham Lincoln stood for? Hardly. Lincoln said, “You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.”

Honest Abe wasn’t quoting the Bible, but those are biblical concepts nonetheless. We’ve taken the most prosperous nation in the history of the world and turned it into the largest debtor nation in the history of the world in less than 3 decades. Things are so out of whack that the federal government is now printing money and borrowing the money coming off the presses and paying interest on it. It’s called QE1 and QE2. “QE” stands for Quantitative Easing, and we’ve had 2 rounds of it so far. The Federal Reserve is now the number 1 buyer of US bonds, and it’s easy to understand why. What nation or individual wants to buy paper money that’s losing value?

We were told that QE was necessary to get the economy moving. If that were true, the economy would be booming right now. We were also told that the stimulus package proposed by the president and passed by Congress would keep the unemployment rate from rising above 8% and get the economy going again. If you follow the news, you know how wrong they were.

Economic gamesmanship can’t fix the mess we’ve created. We need to return to the principles upon which this nation was built – love of God, industry, thrift, responsibility, and respect for human dignity. The welfare state we’ve created is the exact opposite of what Abraham Lincoln had in mind, and its perverse principles are destroying this country.

The courageous men and women who founded the United States understood the high hurdles they would have to jump in order to survive and prosper. They got on with the job of forging a great nation, and when our nation became prosperous and strong, another kind of person dedicated themselves to taking as much as they could from the system. In the process they have brought us to our knees. If another nation had done to us what we’ve done to ourselves, we would consider it an act of war.

History teaches us that nations rise and fall. That’s an undeniable fact, but it’s not inevitable. Prosperity breeds contempt and contempt leads to decay and eventual destruction because of choices people make. We’ve made the wrong choices. It’s time to admit our mistakes and change our ways. We don’t have much time left.
