Isaiah 59: 3-4—For your hands are defiled with blood and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken falsehood, your tongue mutters wickedness. No one sues righteously and no one pleads honestly. They trust in confusion and speak lies; they conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity.

Jeremiah 12: 14-17:

Thus says Yahweh concerning all My wicked neighbors who strike at the inheritance with which I have endowed My people Israel, “Behold I am about to uproot them from their land and will uproot the house of Judah from among them.  And it will come about that after I have uprooted them, I will again have compassion on them; and I will bring them back, each one to his inheritance and each one to his land.  Then if they will really learn the ways of My people, to swear by My name, ‘As Yahweh lives,’ even as they taught My people to swear by Baal, they will be built up in the midst of My people.  But if they will not listen, then I will uproot that nation, uproot and destroy it,” declares Yahweh. (Jeremiah 12: 14-17)

It’s easy to understand why the feds want to regulate the Internet.

The reasons why the federal government wants to regulate the Internet can be summed up in two words: money and control.

First, let’s take a look at the money angle.  The final numbers aren’t in yet, but 2010 is going to be a banner year for online holiday season sales.  Growth in online activity for the 2010 holiday season over the 2009 holiday season is expected to be about 14.3%.  That’s a jump from $33.7 billion last year to roughly $38.5 billion this year, and most of those sales produce no tax revenue for any level of government.  By 2014, annual online sales are expected to reach almost $250 billion and with the federal government and state governments desperately seeking cash, they are chomping at the bit to tap into that cash flow pipeline.

Will governments ever tax the Internet?  Of course they will – eventually, and some states have already started taxing Internet sales.  But for the time being most states and the feds aren’t picking Internet fruit so it can grow faster and produce an even bigger long-term yield.

Second, the Internet has opened up new vistas for people who have expertise and information to share.  They have inundated the web and irrevocably altered our concept of media.  The mainstream media outlets have already taken a huge hit.  Most daily newspapers including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and The Los Angeles Times continue to lose subscribers at a rapid pace.  The Wall Street Journal and a few other newspapers are still growing because of their targeted content and their reputations for excellence.

In the old days, traditional liberal progressive media barons and/or their heirs had a virtual lock on news content.  They got filthy rich because they didn’t have any competition to speak of, but that’s no longer the case.  Competition is fierce, and the quality of competition runs the gamut.  The Internet allows consumers to pick and choose, and they tend to zero in on content providers they trust.  The big losers so far have been LP content providers, and they’re not going away quietly.

It’s no surprise that the thrust to regulate the Internet under the guise of “net neutrality” coincides with the decline in demand for LP mainstream media content and federal government fiscal woes.  To the feds, “net neutrality” means making sure their views reach the public and other perspectives are restricted.  Growth in demand for conservative media content is a free market phenomenon.  The feds think millions of people in this great nation are making bad choices, and they think that by limiting conservative content they can more effectively shape perceptions of reality.

In the end, “net neutrality” boils down to using a government sledge hammer to crush competition, but LP enthusiasts haven’t stopped there.  They’re pushing hard for government subsidies to ensure the survival of failing LP content providers by arguing that they’re the only “legitimate” gatherers and disseminators of content on the planet.  In their world, the LP position is the only “legitimate” point of view.

The fact that people all over the world can read SnyderTalk every day and an editorial like this one, for example, by simply clicking a mouse is proof that traditional LP content providers are in serious trouble.  The feds may be able to protect them and slow down progress for awhile as long as they have an LP president to run interference, but in the long-run LP content providers will fail if they don’t change their evil ways, to borrow a title form one of Santana’s songs.

Thinking people, both young and old, are tired of being force-fed LP baloney that they know doesn’t wash, and they’re becoming increasingly angry about government attempts to restrict access to and control the flow of information.  I have a strong hunch that LP media outlets are going to lose the battle for control of media content and governments will lose their ability to restrict access to information as WikiLeaks made clear, but government will eventually tap into the online cash flow pipeline.  That’s a fact.
