Isaiah 49: 19-22—“For your waste and desolate places and your destroyed land — surely now you will be too cramped for the inhabitants, and those who swallowed you will be far away. The children of whom you were bereaved will yet say in your ears, ‘The place is too cramped for me; make room for me that I may live here.’ Then you will say in your heart, ‘Who has begotten these for me, since I have been bereaved of my children and am barren, an exile and a wanderer? And who has reared these? Behold, I was left alone; from where did these come?’” Thus says Adonai Yahweh, “Behold, I will lift up My hand to the nations and set up My standard to the peoples; and they will bring your sons in their bosom, and your daughters will be carried on their shoulders.”

“On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed watchmen….” (Isaiah 62: 6)

Scripture of the day:

Syria continues to provide increasingly sophisticated weapons to Lebanese militias, including Hizballah, despite Resolution 1680, which calls on Syria to undertake measures against the movement of arms into Lebanese territory. The Secretary General’s report again cites no progress in the disbanding or disarmament of militias since the last report. Hizballah remains the most significant and most heavily armed Lebanese militia. It could not have done so if not for Syria’s aid and facilitation of Syrian and Iranian arms, which also violates UN Security Council Resolution 1747. While Hizballah appears to be attempting to exercise control over parts of Lebanon, Hizballah itself is not accountable to Lebanon’s democratic institutions.

With talks at a stalemate and no agreement from the Israelis to reinstate a settlement freeze, the Palestinians are playing a new card: an end game to statehood through an appeal to the international community.

#####

The Obama Administration likes to imagine its Middle East peace process is in a holding pattern until after the midterm elections — but a holding pattern implies momentum, a quality conspicuously lacking in the current negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. Instead, the Administration’s effort has effectively stalled at the first hurdle: the impasse over Israel’s continued settlement construction which the Palestinians say prevents them from returning to the table.

It’s not every day that Israel marks a victory away from home, especially not on hostile grounds such as University of Cambridge in England. But on Thursday, Israel secured an unexpected triumph in the institution’s prestigious debate club, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Monday.

“Ambiguity,” the key word used in describing Israel’s relationship vis-a-vis nuclear weapons, existed from the start. “There was a secret even before there was anything to hide,” states Avner Cohen, an Israeli-born philosopher and historical researcher who is an expert in Israel’s nuclear policy, in his new book.

In the farhud, the anti-Jewish riots in Iraq in 1941, 180 Jews were murdered and 700 were injured. In the course of violent demonstrations that flared in Egypt in November 1945, 400 Jews were hurt, and much Jewish-owned property was looted and damaged. Rioting in Libya, also in November 1945, was much more costly: 130 Jews were murdered and 266 were injured. The December 1947 riots in Syria left 13 Jews dead (eight of them children ) in Damascus, and 26 wounded. In Aleppo, 150 houses were damaged, five schools and 10 synagogues were torched, and there were dozens of Jewish casualties. At the same time in Aden, Yemen, 97 Jews were murdered and 120 were injured; some Jews who experienced these events deem them “the holocaust of Yemenite Jewry.”

It comes as little surprise that Palestinian-Israeli negotiations are at an impasse. The lesson after nearly two decades of bilateral negotiations is that direct talks alone are not enough to guarantee peace. A principled, unshakable commitment to international law is also required.

One of the more amazing predictions regarding the Jewish people that appears in the Torah is that numerically speaking we will always be a small nation. That certainly has been the case over our long history. At the time of the destruction of the Second Temple the Chinese were twice our numbers. Almost two millennia later the Chinese are approximately one hundred times our numbers. In 1939 on the eve of World War II there were 19 million Jews in the world. Today, 70 years later we are at least four million under that number. There should be simply by natural growth 60 million Jews in the world but there are not nearly that number extant.

Days after a group of rabbis urged Safed residents not to rent apartments to Arabs, former Chief Rabbi Ovadia Yosef reiterated a 500-year-old halakhic ruling barring the sale of land in the Land of Israel to non-Jews – a move that appeared to be a show of support for the other rabbis.

This week Hebron’s Jewish Community received an unusually large number of greetings. Specifically, 14 ministers, five deputy ministers, 24 MKs from both the coalition and the opposition (three from Kadima) and Knesset speaker Ruby Rivlin, who sent special messages of support to Hebron.  This came as part of an annual celebration as we read the weekly Torah portion, Chayei Sarah, in which Abraham purchases Ma’arat HaMachpela, the caves of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, almost 4,000 years ago.

There is nothing wrong with the article in the New York Times under the headline, “March in Israel Ends in Clashes In Arab Town.” It correctly describes a march of Israel’s extreme religious-nationalist Jewish right, the organizational descendants of Meir Kahane, in the Arab city of Umm El-Fahm. Umm El-Fahm is the most prominent base of Israel’s extreme religious-nationalist Muslims, whose leadership routinely is on the edge of criminal incitement for high pitched raving against what it describes as Jewish desecrations of Islamic sites.

On Tuesday US voters are set to repudiate US President Barak Obama’s agenda for their country. Unfortunately, based on his behavior in the face of a similar repudiation last January, it is safe to assume that Obama will not abandon his course.

Successive American presidents and Israeli prime ministers have spoken out about the importance of the US-Israel relationship and how this alliance is sacrosanct, based on Israel’s standing as a vital US military and political ally and a key outpost of Western-style democracy in the Middle East.  Yet one of the most critical elements shaping US-Israeli relations is actually one of the most overlooked – the commercial ties between American and Israeli companies. While these partnerships have generated innovations that have transformed the world, they’re about to receive an infusion of energy that will change the countries’ alliance for generations to come.

Prof. Aryeh Admon of the biology faculty claims that the test will provide doctors with a rich variety of information that until now has not been available and is suited to the trend of “personalized medicine,” in which treatment is suited to the genetic and other characteristics of the patient. The development was part of the doctoral work of Dr. Miochal Bassani- Sternberg and will help suit medication to the patient.

Israel is having a U.S. firm (General Dynamics) manufacture 600 of the new Nemer IFV (infantry fighting vehicle) over the next eight years. The first hundred or so were built in Israel, but the rest can be built more cheaply in the United States. One infantry battalion is already equipped with Israeli built Nemers, and the other three battalions of the Golani Brigade will get Nemers over the next three years.

Even after 35 kilometers (about 22 miles) of movement on the foothills of the Carmel Mountains over a period of 48 hours without sleep, in 30 degree heat and with dozens of kilograms of equipment on their backs, the Egoz Unit combat soldiers remain focused on their mission. When a demolition charge “explodes” near one of the teams and “hits” almost half the team, the others didn’t hesitate for a moment. They immediately lifted their friends on their shoulders and continued on their mission.

Ancient gardens are the stuff of legend, from the Garden of Eden to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Now researchers at Tel Aviv University, in collaboration with Heidelberg University in Germany, have uncovered an ancient royal garden at the site of Ramat Rachel near Jerusalem, and are leading the first full-scale excavation of this type of archaeological site anywhere in the pre-Hellenistic Levant.

I wonder how many of those commentators who diligently monitor the “muzzling” activities of the “Israel Lobby” will note the story of a UN official who made a perfectly reasonable observation at a recent conference, and now has everyone from Hamas to the government of Jordan demanding his head on a plate.

In 1937 a national exhibition site opened in Belgrade. Originally intended to represent indigenous advancements, in 1941 it became a Nazi concentration camp called Sajmište and its main use became the extermination of Jewish women, children, and elderly. This was not recognized until the 1980s; until then the climate was one of socialism. During the nationalist era, history was propagandized by the state to suit its own purposes, and truth was concealed. This cleansing of the real history, however, was subsequently obscured to the extent that the area of the camp and its “hospital” was transformed into a nightclub. The commemoration of the truth about the former camp requires the intervention of the political and financial elites.

The recent visit by the German president to Turkey was a major event in more ways than one. Apart from underlining Turkey’s growing economic and political clout, the visit was the first time the country’s first lady, Hayrunissa Gul, welcomed foreign guests at a state function.

#####

The translation into Hebrew of Egypt’s hit novel “The Yacoubian Building” by Israeli peace advocates has infuriated its author, who supports a cultural boycott of the Jewish state.

#####

In another development, a PA official said that Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Aboul Gheit and General Intelligence chief Omar Suleiman may visit Ramallah on Thursday for talks with PA President Mahmoud Abbas on the future of the peace talks with Israel and efforts to end the Hamas-Fatah rift.

#####

One of the most important–perhaps most important – indicator of Turkish government foreign policy is the National Security Council (NSC) threat assessment. The well-intended EU demanded that Turkey, as a sign of its democracy, broke the armed force’s power over the NSC. This happened, though whether it is in the long-term interest of Turkey’s democracy is still an open question.

Americans are getting ready to go to the polls and the story is that we are angry, frustrated and feeling economically pinched. All true, no doubt. But we would like to make the case that along with voting our economic concerns and interests, voters should keep in mind that our country remains at war and the larger security trends are not, at the moment, running in our favor.

#####

Now there has been a huge upsurge of awareness among Americans that we are broke. The president and his Democrats have rung up more debt than all the presidents who came before him. And that debt comes just as the cost of entitlements is coming due for the baby boomers.

Can a lib really say to Fred Barnes/Krauthammer/Kristol/Hume that “Bush Lied, People Died” — and not get his clock cleaned? Could a lib say that the Bush tax cuts “solely” benefited the rich — without one of these gentlemen pointing out that everybody who paid taxes got a break and that the very rich, the top 1 percent of income earners, pay almost 40 percent of the federal income taxes?

#####

Why have American voters gone so sour on Barack Obama’s Democratic party? It’s a question that must puzzle many in Britain who – Conservative as well as Labour and Lib Dem – welcomed Obama’s election two years ago and saw him leading America and the world into broad, sunlit uplands. But now it appears that Obama’s party is about to take what George W Bush called a “thumping” in the mid-term elections on November 2.

#####

A sustained White House campaign to drum up controversy over how much outside groups are influencing the congressional elections may be paying off.  At the very least, the administration’s attacks on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and groups affiliated with former Bush political guru Karl Rove are distracting some voters from the Republicans’ attacks on President Obama’s leadership and agenda.

#####

“Just who does Jon Stewart think he is?” It’s a question posed by, among others, The Washington Post’s Paul Farhi, who answers it thus: “These days, he can claim to be many things: political satirist, pseudo-anchorman, media critic, author, successful businessman, philanthropist, Emmy Award magnet. On Monday he arrives in Washington in a new, self-anointed role: as our national voice of reason, moderation and rationality — a uniter, you might say, not a divider.”

There are many close races for the U.S. Senate this year, and many strange ones, but the bitter contest between two unlovable candidates in quirky Nevada is, for my money, the closest, strangest race of all.

#####

During his barnstorming around the country in the final frantic lead-up to Election Day, President Obama landed on several college campuses to try and get young voters fired up once again and ready to go to the polls. He would have done better to spend his time in senior centers. That is where the voters are (especially in off-year elections) and they’re the ones who are fired up this year. But it’s not clear where they want to go. Energized and angry — senior voters are ready to throw out Democratic candidates, but not ready to embrace Republican programs.

#####

In a radio interview that aired Monday on Univision, President Obama chided Latinos who “sit out the election instead of saying, ‘We’re gonna punish our enemies and we’re gonna reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us.’ ” Quite a uniter, urging Hispanics to go to the polls to exact political revenge on their enemies – presumably, for example, the near-60 percent of Americans who support the new Arizona immigration law.

The discovery of two explosive-laden packages sent from Yemen and aimed at U.S. and Western interests represents a new escalation in the terror threat emanating from this violence-wracked, poverty-stricken Mideast country.

To my friends in Israel: I apologize for former President Jimmy Carter.

To my friends in Israel:

I apologize for the nasty things former President Carter has said about you.  I won’t make excuses for him, but I urge you to remember that he is a bitter old man.  His failed presidency still haunts him to this day.  His most recent book, White House Diary, is his latest attempt to establish his credibility in the eyes of the world and to restore the dignity he thought he once had.  I suspect that he is driven by an inner compulsion to rewrite history before it’s too late.  Rest assured that no one else will be so, shall we say, audacious.

We endured him as President for four years, and his incessant ramblings are a constant reminder of our mistake.  Even so, we bear with him out of sympathy, and we hope you will do the same.  I know it’s not easy when he visits your region of the world, lunches with your avowed enemies, and makes public pronouncements that betray his ignorance and/or lack of understanding.  This is the man who claimed to be a nuclear engineer because he got an undergraduate degree in physics.  His sense of proportion when it comes to his abilities and his accomplishments is lacking.  Need I say more?  I hope not.

As a goodwill gesture, I want to share with you a photo that will help you to appreciate Jimmy Carter, the man.  It was taken in 1979 while he was President of the United States.  On a fishing trip, he was attacked by a “ferocious” rabbit.  His political opponents, Republicans and Democrats, used this picture of him defending himself with a boat paddle during the “attack” to support their claim that Mr. Carter had lost touch with reality and his ability to reason.  Keep in mind that Don Quixote tilted at windmills.

Be that as it may, it’s an amusing picture that I hope you will enjoy.  I call it “Jimmy Carter and the Attack Rabbit”.
