SnyderTalk Commentary: Columbia University’s president, Lee Bollinger, has demonstrated yet again that his natural leaning is left, far left.  You’ll recall that he bears the lion’s share of the responsibility for inviting Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to speak at Columbia in 2007 where he delivered one of his villainous Jew-hating, Holocaust denying speeches.

Bollinger’s decision to invite Ahmadinejad caused such a raucous backlash that he tried to make amends by formally introducing his “honored guest” to the audience with the most biting remarks I’ve ever heard from a “host”.  Obviously, President Bollinger knows who butters his toast, and it’s not the Islamic Republic of Iran or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.  I’ll bet Bollinger was trying to appease some irate donors.  It’s amazing how submissive liberal progressives can be when their cash flow is threatened.

This time Bollinger is arguing that the mainstream media needs government help to stay alive.  He believes we can’t survive as a free nation without the traditional media outlets that share his leftist philosophy.  The liberal progressive bias in the mainstream media is well-known and indisputable.  They are losing their customer base and ad revenues because too few people share their viewpoint and because people are seeking honest reporting.  They’re finding it too.  They’re getting more and better information from news sources that don’t believe their primary mission is to advance a leftist agenda.

It’s ironic that Bollinger chose to deliver his message in The Wall Street Journal.  While The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other leftist newspapers are losing readers and ad dollars, The Wall Street Journal is doing better than ever.  So is Fox News Channel while CNN languishes.  Media outlets that didn’t even exist 10 years ago are flourishing as well.  For instance, Pajamas Media and YouTube are going gangbusters.  Clearly, there’s a market for news, and there is no shortage of news sources providing good content—information that wouldn’t have seen the light of day if the mainstream media had their way.  Problem is the news sources people are supporting aren’t the ones that Bollinger prefers, thus his call for government help.

History is loaded with examples of firms and industries that have lost touch with their markets, and rather than dealing with their problems, they sought government protection.  Businesses that adjusted to the new competitive landscape didn’t just survive.  They thrived.  Consider Ford Motor Company.  Ford looked bankruptcy in the eye in the early 1980s and changed their approach to the market.  GM’s leaders weathered that storm without making the hard choices they should have made.  In 2008, a retooled Ford came through a far more severe economic downturn unscathed while GM’s leaders hopped on their private jets and headed for Washington to beg for help.

Demand for automobiles isn’t dependent on any particular car manufacturer, and the number of new cars sold in 2009 and 2010 would have been the same with or without General Motors.  Similarly, demand for news isn’t dependent on the mainstream media.  The ever-changing market for news has adjusted to the needs of today’s more technologically proficient consumers.  The Wall Street Journal and Fox News have developed up to date business models that work while The New York Times and CNN have lagged far behind.  The answer isn’t government assistance for failing media dinosaurs.  The solution is to let the free market weed out the weak players.

There’s another issue involved here that deserves careful consideration.  When Congress bailed out General Motors, people mockingly referred to GM as Government Motors.  Given the government’s stake in the company, that was an apt description.  Can you imagine a government-run or even a government-backed newspaper business in the United States?  The New York Times would probably have to change its motto from “All the News That’s Fit to Print” to “All the News We’re Allowed to Print”.  That wouldn’t be a problem for the editors of the Times during democratic administrations.  They’ve been stooges for liberal progressive politicians for as long as I can remember.

Our government is already in the media business.  We have the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR).  Do we need another subsidized media provider that people are unwilling to buy?  Absolutely not.  Mr. Bollinger should consider taking a course in leadership.  If he does, he’ll discover that success in any undertaking requires constant adjustment to changing conditions.  People are turning away from the mainstream media for a good reason.  Mr. Bollinger should try to figure out what it is.  If he needs help, I’m sure the folks at The Wall Street Journal and Fox News would be willing to lend him a hand.
