“Are you a teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony. If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man. As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.” (John 3: 10-17)

“For here we are not afraid to follow the truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it.” (Thomas Jefferson)

Scripture of the Day:

Isaiah 17: 1-8—“The oracle concerning Damascus.  ‘Behold, Damascus is about to be removed from being a city and will become a fallen ruin.  The cities of Aroer are forsaken; they will be for flocks to lie down in, and there will be no one to frighten them. The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim, and sovereignty from Damascus and the remnant of Aram; they will be like the glory of the sons of Israel,’ declares Yahweh Sabaoth.  ‘Now in that day the glory of Jacob will fade, and the fatness of his flesh will become lean.  It will be even like the reaper gathering the standing grain, as his arm harvests the ears, or it will be like one gleaning ears of grain in the valley of Rephaim.  Yet gleanings will be left in it like the shaking of an olive tree, two or three olives on the topmost bough, four or five on the branches of a fruitful tree,’ declares Yahweh, the God of Israel. ‘In that day man will have regard for his Maker and his eyes will look to the Holy One of Israel.  He will not have regard for the altars, the work of his hands, nor will he look to that which his fingers have made, even the Asherim and incense stands.’”

Do Not Add to His Words or….You will be Proved a Liar

Earlier, I deviated from my rule by criticizing Rabbi Scherman’s translation of the Tanach, and I said that I would depart from it one more time.  Now is the time.  As I said, translating from one language to another is difficult, but in this instance we do not have a translation problem.  Here we have a much more grievous error—a rewriting of Yahweh’s Word.  This He expressly forbids.

In The Stone Edition Tanach, The ArtScroll Series, Rabbi Scherman inserts “[but Moses]” in Proverbs 30: 4—“Who [but Moses] ascended to heaven and descended?  Who else gathered the wind in his palm?  Who else tied the waters in a cloak?  Who established all the ends of the earth?  What is his name, and what is his son’s name, if you know?

Rabbi Scherman’s insertion of “[but Moses]” in this verse violates a fundamental principle of Yahweh—i.e., that we must present His Word accurately.  Since Moses’ name does not appear in Hebrew manuscripts of this passage of Scripture, Rabbi Scherman has rewritten Yahweh’s Word.  As I said earlier, he argues that his translation relies on “Talmudic and Rabbinic sources,” and in this instance he is relying on Rashi’s interpretation that is presented in the Talmud (Megillah 31a). (Scherman, Rabbi Nosson.  The Stone Edition Tanach, The ArtScroll Series®, Mesorah Publications, Brooklyn, New York, 1996, p. 1612)

Obviously, these verses contradict Jewish tradition and support Christian doctrine.  Therefore, it is logical to assume that Rabbi Scherman was attempting to deal with this perceived “problem” in his translation of the Tanach by inserting Moses’ name in Proverbs 30: 4.  Ironically, Proverbs 30: 6 explains how Yahweh looks upon people who distort the meaning of this particular passage of Scripture:

Do not add to His Words, lest He test you and find that you deceived.” (Proverbs 30: 6 from The Stone Edition Tanach, The ArtScroll Series®, Mesorah Publications, Brooklyn, New York, 1996)

The Bible is crystal-clear about this fact.  Yahweh and the Messiah are two distinct Beings yet They are One, and They have One Name.  God’s admonition not to tamper with His Word suggests that He knew some people would attempt to add their own meanings and interpretations to these specific verses, and He warned us not to do it.

The importance of Proverbs 30: 4 should not be underestimated because Yeshua used this verse in His explanation to Nicodemus about the meaning of salvation, or being born again. (John 3: 9-21)  Nicodemus was a Jewish religious leader and a member of the Sanhedrin, and he asked Yeshua this question:

“How can a man be born when he is old?  He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” (John 3: 4)

Below is part of Yeshua’s response:

Nicodemus was an intelligent and well-educated man.  Therefore, we can assume that he was familiar with Proverbs 30: 4 and that he must have known Yeshua was claiming to be Yahweh.  Nicodemus would have been familiar with Isaiah 43: 11 as well, and it says Yahweh is the only Savior.  Eventually, Nicodemus became a believer in Yeshua and was saved, as were many other Jewish religious leaders who lived at that time.  The fact that a significant number of well-educated, religious Jews accepted Yeshua as the Messiah (i.e., Yahweh) has been a major “problem” for non-believing religious Jews since that time and the “problem” persists to this day.

Be that as it may, Rabbi Scherman has no right to alter Yahweh’s Word to make it comply with his or with Rashi’s beliefs.  No one has that right, and no one ever will!  Rabbi Scherman must know this.

Brutal Attack in New Orleans

Commonsense: Right-wing extremism?  I’m more concerned about the crazed fanatics on the left who are nothing more than domestic terrorists.  Read the articles above and you will see that the opposition to rational thought and civilized debate in this country is coming from activists on the left.  They’re affiliated with various groups, but they are loosely connected with the Democratic Party.  This isn’t a partisan political statement.  It’s a simple fact.

A couple of Democratic members of Congress had to endure protesters while they marched to the Capitol Building to enact legislation that the majority of US citizens don’t support.  Some of them say they were spat upon, but there is no video evidence to support their claims.  All we have is their word.  Other Democratic members of Congress have decided not to seek re-election for fear that they have so angered their constituents that they “might” be in danger.  All we know for sure is that they might get shellacked at the polls.  That’s what they’re really afraid of.

This much we do know.  Two young people, one male and the other female, were brutally attacked in New Orleans by an angry mob of leftist radicals.  And what had the victims done?  They were Republicans.  That’s the only reason they were attacked.  It’s time for justice and commonsense.  By justice, I don’t mean the “vigilante justice” meted out by an angry mob of demented cowards in New Orleans.  I’m talking about holding vicious felons accountable in courts of law, and I also mean voting people out of office for betraying our trust.  Commonsense demands it.
