Today I’ll show you where Yahweh’s Name belongs in Luke chapters 3 and 4.  I purposely skipped Luke 2 because I presented it on Christmas day.  You can check it out in the archives.

If you haven’t already read Luke 2 with Yahweh’s Name placed where it belongs, I urge you to check out SnyderTalk’s Christmas day post.  Yahweh’s Name has been edited out of the Bible by scholars and translators who made serious mistakes.  Unfortunately, most people reading the Bible assume they’re reading accurate renderings of the Scriptures.  As it turns out, that is a bad assumption—especially where Yahweh’s Name is concerned.   For details, I suggest that you read Ruach Qadim and the Aramaic English New Testament.  You’ll be glad you did.

Luke 3

  1. Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene,
  2. in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.
  3. And he came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins;
  4. as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, ‘MAKE READY THE WAY OF YAHWEH, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.

Luke 4

  1. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness

  3. And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
  4. And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE.’”
  5. And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
  6. And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.
  7. “Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.”
  8. Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP YAHWEH YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.’”
  9. And he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here;
  10. for it is written, ‘HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU TO GUARD YOU,’
  11. and, ‘ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.’”
  12. And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT YAHWEH YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.’”
  13. When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.
  14. And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district.
  15. And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.
  16. And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.
  17. And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written,
  18. “THE SPIRIT OF YAHWEH IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR.  HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED,
  19. TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF YAHWEH.”
  20. And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him.
  21. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
  22. And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
  23. And He said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard was done at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’”
  24. And He said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown.
  25. “But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land;
  26. and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
  27. “And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
  28. And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things;
  29. and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff.
  30. But passing through their midst, He went His way.
  31. And He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and He was teaching them on the Sabbath;
  32. and they were amazed at His teaching, for His message was with authority.
  33. In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,
  34. “Let us alone! What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
  35. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, he came out of him without doing him any harm.
  36. And amazement came upon them all, and they began talking with one another saying, “What is this message? For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits and they come out.”
  37. And the report about Him was spreading into every locality in the surrounding district.
  38. Then He got up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him to help her.
  39. And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately got up and waited on them.
  40. While the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and laying His hands on each one of them, He was healing them.
  41. Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But rebuking them, He would not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ.
  42. When day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for Him, and came to Him and tried to keep Him from going away from them.
  43. But He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.”
  44. So He kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

Commentary

In Luke chapters 3 and 4, the places where Yahweh’s Name belongs are readily apparent.  Luke is simply quoting the Old Testament (or the Tanach), and Yahweh’s Name belongs in several of the verses he quotes.  Any decent Bible scholar knows that.  So why do the King James Version, the New American Standard Bible, the New International Version, and most other modern Bible translations on the market today delete the only Name in which we have salvation (Joel 2: 32—Joel 3: 5 in the Tanach, Acts 2: 21, Romans 10: 13) and the Name of our Messiah? (Jeremiah 23: 5-6)

The answer is simple and shocking because it reveals a fundamental lack of courage on the part of otherwise competent Bible scholars and translators.  Despite what the Scriptures say, they would rather follow tradition than adhere to Yahweh’s Word that He told us is truth:

“So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, ‘If you continue in My word (i.e. the Scriptures), then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’” (John 8: 31-32)

This is the bottom line.  Many of our traditions are just plain wrong, but we stick with them anyway because challenging tradition can be controversial and sometimes career threatening.

I had a colleague at the University of Virginia who I liked very much and respected a great deal.  He spent most of his career at UVA as an administrator, and for many years he was the chief operating officer (COO) of the university.  As COO, he was responsible for running the university on a day-to-day basis.

When he was approaching retirement, he gave up his administrative position and focused on teaching.  For about 5 years before his retirement, he and I played a lot of golf together, and I got to know him more as a friend than as a colleague.  As COO, for obvious reasons he did his best to avoid controversy.  He was keenly aware of potential conflict situations, and his instincts were finely tuned to sniff them out and lay them to rest before they turned into problems that might embarrass him and/or the university.

I wasn’t a renegade faculty member, but I had a reputation for confronting conflict head-on.  Sometimes I even provoked conflict when I thought things were moving in the wrong direction.  My actions weren’t regarded by university higher-ups as inappropriate because I was promoted to chaired professor—the highest academic rank attainable.  Today, I am a chaired professor emeritus at UVA.

As my friend and I played golf, we discussed many things.  On several occasions, he would look at me, chuckle, and shake his head.  “Neil,” he would say as he paused before continuing in a matter-of-fact way, “that’s controversial.”

If you were part of our foursome and you heard him, you wouldn’t think much of it, but I understood what he was telling me.  In his Virginia Gentleman way, he was saying that I should rethink my position.  He’s dead now, but I still think of him as the consummate Virginia Gentlemen that most UVA faculty members aspire to be.

Although I liked and respected him, at times I thought he went too far to avoid controversy.  Sometimes I think the university would have been better off if he had put his foot down and demanded certain things.  Don’t get me wrong.  He was a topnotch administrator, and he wasn’t afraid to take a strong position if he believed it was necessary, but as I said, I think he could have done more to block certain things and the university would have been better off.

I’m not being too critical of my friend and I’m not telling you anything that I didn’t tell him, but I am making a point.  Many Bible scholars and translators do the same thing.  They try to avoid the inevitable conflict and controversy that they know will result if they insert Yahweh’s Name where it belongs in the Bible.  They do the same thing with the name Jesus.  The Messiah’s Name was never Jesus.  He was given the name Yeshua at birth, and the Bible tells us plainly that His Name is Yahweh. (Jeremiah 23: 5-6)  Even more, Yeshua said that He is Yahweh many times.  For details, read His Name is Yahweh.

Despite the overwhelming evidence supporting the fact that the Messiah is Yahweh, most Bible scholars and translators stick with wrong minded tradition instead of telling us what the Scriptures actually say about the Name Yahweh.  That’s not just wrong.  It’s dangerous because according to the Bible, we have only One Savior—Yahweh. (Isaiah 43: 11)

Candidly, I think Bible scholars and translators have a profit motive for avoiding this “controversial” subject.  If the translators of the New International Version, for instance, had put Yahweh’s Name where it belongs in their version of the Bible, they would have attracted a lot of negative and unwanted publicity, and it would have affected their sales—which translate into profits.  One day they’ll have to justify their decision, but they won’t have to explain their logic to me.  They’ll be talking with Yahweh face-to-face.  Some of them have already had the opportunity to explain their rationale to Yahweh.
